PowerGen Renewable Energy Las Vegas March 1-3, 2005:

PowerGen Renewable Energy Las Vegas March 1-3, 2005 Renewable Energy Opportunities In Turkey By Serdar Cetinkaya

Renewable Energy Opportunities in Turkey:

Renewable Energy Opportunities in Turkey Who are we? U.S. Commercial Service In the American Embassy in Turkey Energy Specialist Our mandate is to help U.S. Companies export (in this case to Turkey) Many services waiting for you…

Renewable Energy Opportunities in Turkey:

Renewable Energy Opportunities in Turkey Turkey is a large country with 70 million population, 2nd largest population in Europe after Germany 16th largest economy in OECD countries The largest economic growth in OECD in 2004 Strategically located in Europe and Asia (Eurasia) Access to Europe, Central Asia and Middle East

Renewable Energy Opportunities in Turkey:

Renewable Energy Opportunities in Turkey Turkey's Wind Energy Potential is large, approx. 88,000 MW (Aegean Sea & Marmara Sea Coasts) Turkey’s economic wind energy potential is 10,000 MW 40 new wind farm projects at about 1,400 MW obtained license as IPP Turkey's total Hydroelectric Potential is 50,000 MW (already 30% power generation from hydro)

Renewable Energy Opportunities in Turkey:

Renewable Energy Opportunities in Turkey Turkey's Geothermal Energy Potential is 35,000 MW (Some small generation already exists) Turkey's Solar Energy Potential: 2,640 sunshine hours, average solar intensity is 3.6 kWh/m2, solar energy potential: 35 Mtoe. (Mediterranean climate) Biomass, Waste to Energy unexplored. (Agricultural country & some methane gas project development as a result of municipal waste.)

Renewable Energy Opportunities in Turkey:

Renewable Energy Opportunities in Turkey Turkey's current energy generation demand of 150,000 GWh expected to grow to 240,000 GWh in 2010 (60% increase), 350,000 GWh in 2015 (133 % increase) This means a few billion dollars of investment each year in the power generation sector.

Renewable Energy Opportunities in Turkey:

Renewable Energy Opportunities in Turkey A lot of interest by the Turkish private sector in the renewable energy (over 1000 MW of renewable energy projects) Most Turkish companies are seeking for U.S. investors and U.S. equipment suppliers with financing. The World Bank (IFC) approved over USD 200 million renewable energy projects.

Renewable Energy Opportunities in Turkey:

Renewable Energy Opportunities in Turkey A draft law for the encouragement of renewable energy generation is in the Parliament, waiting to be approved. This law will need to be approved as part of the potential accession of Turkey to EU. The law enforces electricity retail companies to buy 8 % of their annual electricity sales from renewable energy generators.

Renewable Energy Opportunities in Turkey:

Renewable Energy Opportunities in Turkey This enforcement will go into effect for the public utilities from Jan 1, 2006 if this draft law is accepted. The average price of the electricity to be purchased from renewable generators will be higher than the average market price (expected to be over 5 cents per kWh)

Renewable Energy Opportunities in Turkey:

Renewable Energy Opportunities in Turkey Public utilities are expected to be privatized during 2005-2006 Already public utilities provide buying guarantee from all wind power plants and up to 50 MW hydropower plants. Currently, the public utilities purchase electricity from the renewable energy generators at 10% lower than the average wholesale market price Average wholesale market price is 6 cents per kWh currently.

Renewable Energy Opportunities in Turkey:

Renewable Energy Opportunities in Turkey Hydroelectric power generation dominates Turkey's renewable energy generation. One of the major hydro generation projects is Southeast Anatolia Project (GAP), which is an integrated hydroelectric and irrigation project. The GAP project is situated in the lower reaches of Euphrates and Tigris rivers. The project covers an area of almost 74,000km2, equaling the one-tenth of Turkey's total land surface. Upon completion, GAP will include 21 dams, 19 hydropower plants and a network of tunnels and irrigation canals and pipes.
