TALENT SUPPORT PROJECT Jan Hughes January 07 PROJECT AIMS: PROJECT AIMS TO IDENTIFY SECONDARY AGE PUPILS PERFORMING AT NATIONAL LEVEL AND BEYOND, INITIALLY IN SPORT, AND OFFER A SUPPORT PROGRAMME AIMED AT FULFILLING TALENT TARGETS. THE PROJECT: THE PROJECT To form a LA High Performers group To train staff talent mentors in each school To provide a parental information workshop To provide pupil lifestyle support workshops To provide an extension pilot for selected pupils using PDA technology IDENTIFY INITIAL PARTNERS: IDENTIFY INITIAL PARTNERS LA Gandamp;T Co-ordinator LA PE Adviser and Consultant PDM’s and Staff from LA Sports Partnerships Youth Sports Trust School Gandamp;T Co-ordinators Heads of Physical Education Depts SETTING THE SCENE: SETTING THE SCENE TALENT WORKSHOP FOR Gandamp;T CO-ORDINATORS Provide a challenging, interactive workshop to motivate, convert and inspire action! Provide a copy of 'Discovering and Developing Talent in Schools' by Bette Gray Fow. Provide a Talent file. SECOND STAGE PARTNERS: SECOND STAGE PARTNERS Headteachers Identified school staff Identified pupils Parents JSLA andamp; CSLA students Sporting Champions City Learning Centre TIMESCALE : 1 YEAR: TIMESCALE : 1 YEAR PLANNED ACTION Inform all parties Identify pupils Train staff as Talent Mentors Launch the project Provide pupil Lifestyle workshops HOW?: HOW? Set up a working party; decide responsibilities Agree funding streams Secure Headteachers’ support in writing Book a YST trainer Secure venues for tutor training, mentor training and lifestyle support workshops. FIND THE PUPILS: FIND THE PUPILS Provide templates for identification Address Gandamp;T Co-ordinators’ meetings Address Heads of Physical Education meetings Form a database Write to pupils and parents PROJECT LAUNCH: PROJECT LAUNCH Central venue: invite pupils, parents, staff mentors, head teachers. Project leaders: vision and overview. Employ Olympic gold medallist to give a motivational speech and engage pupils in an active session. Deliver a parental workshop. TUTOR & MENTOR TRAINING: TUTOR andamp; MENTOR TRAINING Advertise courses Tutor training: to enable workshop delivery Mentor training: to mentor pupils for talent targets YST Tutor; 1 day each PUPIL LIFESTYLE WORKSHOPS: PUPIL LIFESTYLE WORKSHOPS Sports Partnership teams to deliver 3 twilight sessions Invite pupils and mentors: joint target setting PRIMARY EXTENSION: PRIMARY EXTENSION Advertise and deliver a primary Talent support workshop, examining issues. Invite interested primary staff to second phase training as Tutors and Mentors. Primary workshops to be run 'in house' or through the SSCo programme. TALENT AREA EXTENSION: TALENT AREA EXTENSION Adapt workshop materials for Drama and Music. Advertise Phase 2 Tutor and Mentor training to other talent departments in schools. Build capacity for 'in house' workshop delivery. Link up Talent depts within a school to form a Talent support group. PDA EXTENSION: PDA EXTENSION Work with a CLC to provide XDA technology. Select 2 pupils; criteria to include: individual sport; evidence of exceptional commitment and progression; support structures in place; owned targets.
