iSpace RetreatBlue-Sky Brainstorming : iSpace Retreat Blue-Sky Brainstorming Manu Kumar (sneaker@stanford.edu) Ron Yeh (ronyeh@stanford.edu)
Warning! : Warning! Several of these ideas were entered into our idealog after several drinks at CHI
Not limited by concerns of 'practicality'
Hence Blue-sky!
Idea #1: Kill the mouse (C.A.T) : Idea #1: Kill the mouse (C.A.T) C.A.T.
Cornea Assisted Tracking
Concept:
Use multiple camera mounted on a notebook/display to track users eye and face movements
Triangulate between pupils and nose
Issues:
Implicit vs. Explicit interaction
Mouse doesn’t track your eyes, until you press a key on the keyboard
Clicking may be a key on the keyboard (reduce homing-time)
Precision, Calibration, People with glasses, Viewing angle, Size of screen, Field of view.
Related Research:
BlueEye by IBM, Ron’s quick literature search…
Idea #2: Still kill the mouse… : Idea #2: Still kill the mouse… BorgPoint
Laser pointer on a notebook
Concept:
Use head (eyeglass mounted) head lasers to point to the screen
Detection of the laser pointer on the surface of the display
Mouse pointer tracks lasers for feedback
Issues:
Encumbers user by requiring a physical devices
Requires fine-controlled head-movement
Instrument screens to detect pointing precisely
Related Research:
Lumipoint – Several years at Stanford
Laser Pointer + Big Screen
Idea #3: Non-virtual Communities : Idea #3: Non-virtual Communities Using technology to encourage in-person social interaction
Concept:
Reverse the trends for 'virtual communities'
Use technology to facilitate 'real communities'
Scenario #1:
Visitors to CHI carrying wireless PDAs able to instantly lookup 'public' information about each other
'matching algorithm' based on users preferences to suggest who to meet. Alert users based on proximity
Related Research/Ideas:
Friendster, Love Getty
Idea #4: TenUI : Idea #4: TenUI Thought enhanced User-Interfaces
Flow/Organization of information based on how each person thinks – personalized.
Concept:
Use an interface similar to Brain in order to organize not only thoughts, but email, calendar, contacts files
Unified interface for: Outlook + Internet Explorer + Windows Explorer + IM + Photos?
Issues:
May not be hci-research other than 'usability testing' and 'systems' (Product vs. Research)
Related Research
Brain, Microsoft?
Idea #5: Blog/WIKI views : Idea #5: Blog/WIKI views Add personalized temporal views to Blogs/Wikis in order to make it easier in order to look at 'new' information
Concept:
Automated approach of collating and displaying information that is 'new-to-you'
Another idea: Blogger + Sparrow + WebDAV
Issues:
Are Blogging/WIKIs etc popular enough to make it worthwhile?
