Global learners: Often will be fuzzy on details andamp; need to get an overview before plunging in

Learning Styles- Review & Update : Learning Styles- Review andamp; Update Cultural Differences: Emotion African American Authentic is generally passionate and animated Native American Preferred communication style is restrained Anglo /European Emotionally expressive communication is not a preferred mode in public communication situations Asian Amer. The control of emotional display is highly valued Hispanic With unfamiliar persons, will tend to be somewhat low-key. May state their points quite directly, but in a quiet and respectful manner. With only Hispanics present, a high level of emotional expression is acceptable

Directness in stating the point, purpose, or conclusion of a communication is not considered appropriate Hispanic Directness in stating the point, purpose, or conclusion of a communication is not the preferred style

Native American Direct prolonged eye contact is seen as invasive Anglo /European Speaker - make intermittent brief contact. Listener gaze fairly steadily at the speaker. Asian Amer. Direct eye contact lasting longer than a second or two is avoided, Hispanic Direct eye contact is often viewed as disrespectful

Anglo /European 'Medium' range of gestures Asian Amer. Usually kept close to the body and are quite restrained Hispanic Tend to use a medium to high level of gestures

Anglo /European Individualism orientation. View the 'self' as located within the individual person Asian Amer. Person’s identity and status are intimately tied to the identity and status of their family Hispanic Identity is intimately tied to the identity and status of their family

If interacting with non-Indians, often prefer a slightly larger interaction distance. Anglo /European Usual distance for social conversation is 2-3 feet Asian Amer. Closer than Western norm Hispanic Distance tends to be somewhat less than that of European Americans

In public settings, touch is often so rare as to be virtually non-existent Hispanic Tend to use touch more than cultures originating in Northern Europe, the U.S., or Canada
Learning Styles- Review & Update : Learning Styles- Review andamp; Update Cultural Differences: Vocal Patterns African American A wide range of both volume and pitch Native American Relatively narrow, quiet range of pitch, tone, and volume Anglo /European Tend to be in a mid-range of pitch and on the low end of vocal variation Asian Amer. A relatively quiet and low-key vocal pattern is the ideal Hispanic Normal range narrower than for native English speakers. Often pitch and volume that are 'normal' conversation in English only present in Spanish in the 'angry' range of conversation.
