Trends and Fads:

Trends and Fads A fad has no discernible reason for rising. Whereas a trend is identifiable and explainable. A fad has a life span of less than two years. A trend is indefinite. It has an end, but it has more legs than a fad. A fad has a fast rise. It explodes onto the scene. A trend has a slow rise and is difficult to pinpoint the beginning and end since it is an evolutionary process. A fad has the scope of one product, property or theme whereas a trend has several of these across the society. A fad usually disappears after a few years. A trend may fall below its peak but is still meaningfully present. A fad has little impact on developments that follow where a trend impacts the developments that follow. Some examples: Fad - Barney vs. Trend - Edutainment; Fad - Oat Bran vs. Trend - Healthy cooking; Fad - The Simpsons vs. Trend - Prime time animation.

'I used to think that cyberspace was fifty years away. What I thought was fifty years away, was only ten years away. And what I thought was ten years away... it was already here. I just wasn't aware of it yet.' -Bruce Sterling
