Aplicaciones y servicios multiplataforma – Convergencia entre móviles, TV e Internet Matías Attwell – Gerente General de Terra Argentina y Director de Negocios Móviles Terra Latinoamérica February 28th 2007, Cartagena de Indias – Foro Iberoamericano de Convergencia

Convergence is being shaped by...:

Convergence is being shaped by... The 3-screen experience. Not only the new and significant developments of TVs, PCs and Cell Phones/Portable Devices, but a most notable trend: new gadgets, services and content that allow connectivity and 'content-shifting' among them. Portability: a myriad devices compete to be the one of choice for the growing mobility needs of consumers. Multi-task gadgets vs. Gadgets that aim to do one thing really well. The 'Anywhere Consumer': the habits (current and future) of people and their interaction with technology in a landscape with multiple and constant connectivity options. User Generated Content: several years in the forming, Content massively produced by Internet users is reaching new heights, and companies aim to offer them innovative ways of creating and distributing new content. On the other hand, traditional Content Powerhouses are learning to take to their advantage (and their audience’s) this powerful content ecosystem. New technology: Full HD TV, Windows Vista, new and more powerful PC’s and hardware for home use, portable video and music, cell-phones that get more intelligent, GPS, Gaming consoles, content-shifting devices, etc. Significant challenges ahead: really improved user interfaces, connectivity infrastructure, interoperability.

The 3-screen experience:

The 3-screen experience Interactive TV – using your cell-phone to interact with TV shows (Ex.: Lost, American Idol, etc.). Synchronized Download Services (Ex.: Jamba Music Service). TVoIP (Ex.: ATandamp;T offers 300 standard definition channels and 25 HD channels over MS technology). Big Internet Players with more and more applications for portable devices (Ex.: Yahoo! Go, Gmail, etc.) Cell-Phones with VoIP capabilities (Ex.: Netgear’s Wi-Fi phone w/Skype). New gadgets that make it easier to watch video on cell-phones and other portable devices (Ex.: Samsung Ultra Video.). Mobile TV: increased video content offer via cell-phones. Live and on demand content (Ex.: MobiTV). Internet Ready portable devices and mobile applications (Ex.: Nokia N93i with Vox, Nokia Internet Tablet). Off Network Content Delivery (Ex.: Qualcomm’s Mediaflo technology). 3-screen devices and services (Ex.: MobiTV, SlingBox) TV/PC Monitors all-in-one (Ex.: Dell’s 27’’ monitor/TV) Cross-platform content offering-Internet TV (Ex.: CBS’s Innertube, ABC Interactive, Terra TV). Media receivers and content-shifting devices bring PC content and Internet Services, especially music, video and radio, to the TV (Ex.: Sling Catcher, Apple’s iTV, Orb, Sony Bravia, etc.). TV PC Cell-phones andamp; Portable Devices

The 3-screen experience:

The 3-screen experience Increasingly complex business environment. New players make significant impact. New business opportunities appear in the interconnection between the 3 screens. Subscription, advertising, Hardware + Service models (iPod+iTunes, TiVO, SlingBox). Carriers (mobile telephony and broadband) don’t necessarily provide the content and applications people use on their portable devices. Small, targeted companies and big Internet content players (such as Google, Yahoo!, MSN and Terra) do. Dominant players in their categories create whole set of businesses around them (Ex. Skype phones and accessories, iPod gear and compatible software, etc.). Business Perspective

The “Anywhere” Consumer:

The 'Anywhere' Consumer The 'Anywhere' Consumer doesn’t need 'always on' connectivity all the time. 90% of music on iPods is music they already have and loaded on it (Portable Mobility). Online activities are a 'preview' of mobile activities. Consumers tend to do on their mobile devices what they’re doing online: web access (web surfing, information search, publish/share their own content), entertainment (audio, video, gaming) and communication (voice, messaging). Doesn’t rely on only one device for his mobility needs. Although many manufacturers bet on adding multiple functionalities to one device to increase their market share, the 'anywhere' consumer chooses technology based on the task at hand. Laptops, cell-phones, audio/video players, portable gaming consoles, PDAs fill his mobility needs. All-in-one devices are gaining adepts, but face two big obstacles: content/application interoperability and user-interface. The 'Anywhere' Consumer Carries computing power Accesses Broadband Networks through a variety of means Acesses entertainment Chooses his own definition of 'community', regardless of geography Chooses technology based on the task at hand

Mobility – The multi-device landscape:

Mobility – The multi-device landscape WEB ACCESS ENTERTAINMENT COMMUNICATION Web surfing Information andamp; Search Publish andamp; Share Content Gaming Audio Video Voice Messaging Microsoft Zune Apple’s iPhone Sony Playstation Portable Nokia N93i Samsung 720 S-XGen ultramobile computer Samsung Ultra Video Netgear Skype Phone Nokia Internet Tablet Verizon’s V Cast Mobile TV LG phone and Qualcomm's MediaFlo technology allow Verizon to offer streaming video with content from CBS, NBC, MTV, Fox, and ESPN. 520MHz processor running Windows CE 5.0. Google Search, Google Maps and Gmail will come bundled on some Samsung phones. Phone and Personal Video Player . Wi-Fi phone to make VoIP phone calls with resident Skype application.

User Generated Content:

User Generated Content Online content publishing services continue to attract millions of users, who blog, post photos and videos... ...but tools and content keep on evolving and becoming better and more diverse. Erasing distinction between professional and 'amateur' content. More powerfool tools to remix, edit and add content to user generated videos (Ex.: ibloks.com, bubbleply.com). Users can produce quality 3D animation video ('machinima') using graphic-rendering machines bundled in games. Or take part in Second Life’s 3D world and social network. And they can cross platforms making their own user-generated mobile content (www.mynumo.com).

From Old Media to New Media - CBS:

From Old Media to New Media - CBS CBS’s Leslie Moonves’ keynote address showed why CBS has become a succesful new media company coming from a traditional media business. CBS’s stock price rose 25% in the last year. Open CBS Premium content on the web, through Innertube (CSI, Two and a Half men, etc.). 24-hour News Channel on Verizon mobile phones, supported by MediaFlow technology. CBS Sportsline and CSTV teamed to make the online broadcast of the finals of College Basketball the most trafficked streaming event in the history of the Internet. 'The L Word' TV show sparked a related community site called www.ourchart.com, allowing fans to interact and access to podcasts, blogs and videos about the show. CBS will allow 3D world site Second Life’s users to recreate and 'mash-up' Star Trek episodes. Partnership with SlingMedia to allow people to resend CBS programming to friends through SlingBox. Over 100 CBS Radio stations broadcast over the Internet. CBS branded channel on YouTube attracted 40,000 subscribers and 75 million views in three months. Leslie Moonves: 'Our goal is clear: to evolve from being a one-way content distribution and content company into being a sort of new thing: an audience company'.

3-screen Content Distribution - SlingBox:

3-screen Content Distribution - SlingBox Slingbox is connected to a TV set and then encrypts and streams the TV content over the Internet to be accessed with PC browsers and cell-phones. Announced for 2007, Slingcatcher will do the reverse task: fetch PC content to see it on the TV. It will support HD video.

3-screen Content Distribution - MobiTV:

3-screen Content Distribution - MobiTV Provides live TV content to mobile phones and other portable devices. Channel line-up includes ESPN, NBC, FoxSports, ABCNews, Animal Planet, Discovery Channel and The Weather Channel. Deal with ATandamp;T to also provide live channels through the web to Broadband subscribers. Really good video quality in spite of mobile network irregular capabilities.

From the desk to the living-room:

From the desk to the living-room Michael Dell made several announcements on his keynote address at CES, all focused on 'gearing-up the family room'. The two main products announced: - The Dell Home Media Suite, sporting Core Two Duo processor, two gigabytes of memory, one terabyte of RAID disk drive, and a DVD read/write optical drive and loaded with Windows Vista - A 27-inch display (TV/PC Monitor), apt for Full HD programming, complemented with a PC Tuner capable of receiving digital cable. It enables Vista PCs to tune, view, and pause live television, and record HD TV right on the hard disk. Windows Vista New graphic interface (Aero) incorporates 3D looks, among other things. Bundled with New edition of Windows Media Center. New file system, improved file search. New Windows ReadyBoost feature can swap flash memory with any large USB device to give PCs extra RAM capacity.

Challenges Ahead:

Challenges Ahead We’re facing a remarkable present and promising future for the Content andamp; Technology industry. However, there are still significant hurdles to overcome to fulfill its promises: Broadband infrastructure, both fixed and mobile: devices, applications and content offers claim to be ready to deliver even more exciting services and entertainment. However, to fully develop that offer, increased bandwidth is needed. Michael Dell especially remarked the subject, comparing American broadband capabilities to those much better in South-East Asia and some European countries. User-interfaces: How are people going to find relevant content among the infinite choices they have through their '3-screen experience'? Not only better search, but also really simple and intelligent interfaces will be needed for consumers not to be lost in a labyrinth. Interoperability: 'walled gardens' of different kinds (content formats, networks, DRM, etc.) seem to be one of the most difficult obstacles for an environment with seamless device integration and content distribution. Legal issues, especially Intellectual Property related: Digital Rights Management technology and fair use in a digital landscape, in which content is shifted from one device to the other, is far from being a solved problem.
