To put things into perspective, a Magento powered eCommerce store depends on four elements, which are: Layout Templates Skins Locale If you are about to setup an online store, then upcoming information will surely help you in Magento Development process.

Choosing a Magento Theme:

Choosing a Magento Theme Before you actually initiate the Magento Theme customization process you need to choose one template for your eStore. You will get two options to choose a theme, either you can settle down with the free one or else buy a premium template which might cost you a bit. Well, free themes are good enough to launch your online store but when your business grows it is recommended to switch to the premium template. The primary benefit of these premium themes is that they have better designs, modification options and comes with complete technical support.

Unzipping the Magento Theme:

Unzipping the Magento Theme No matter which theme you will download, it will come in the zipped format. To unzip it, you need a WinRAR, WinZip or any other tool that helps you open the folder and allows you to access its content. Once you have unzipped the folder, copy all the contents to the new folder on your computer or laptop.

Copying App and Skin Folder:

Copying App and Skin Folder First you need to copy app folder under Your_Magento_Installation/app/design/frontend/default (which will turn into something like this) Your_Magento_Installation/app/design/frontend/default/new_theme The next step is to copy the Skin Folder Your_Magento_Installation/skin/frontend/default (this will become something like this) Your_Magento_Installation/skin/frontend/default/new_theme

Login to your Magento Store:

Login to your Magento Store Once you are through with the copying task, now it's time to add your newly downloaded theme to your Magento Store. In this step, you need to login into your Magento store admin. Keep your Magento account ID and password handy. When you log in, open up the dashboard, select the theme that you will use as the layout.

Time to test Magento Theme:

Time to test Magento Theme Before you make your portal go live, it's good to test run the theme at least 2-3 times. Sometimes the Magento Cache stops working and doesn't offer you the preview of changes so you have to do test run manually. It will be good if you disable the cache for the time being. To do so, you have to visit > System > Cache Management > and Select “Disable” > click “Save Cache”.

Design Options:

Design Options In the next step go to System > Configuration and choose the Design Tab. In this tab, you need to copy the name of your new theme that has been copied to your Magento installation in front of the skin. Once you are done, just click on the “Save Config.” And your theme will go live.
