The Jewish Family: A Community of Faith and Social Classes in the World of Jesus :The Jewish Family: A Community of Faith and Social Classes in the World of Jesus Created by Aanjali, Almendra, Katherine, Matthew, and Taylor

The Jewish Family: A Community of Faith :The Jewish Family: A Community of Faith

Marriage :Marriage Most marriages of Jesus’ era were predetermined by the parents. Couples married when they were very young. Marriage celebrations and events lasted a long time. Even though the marriages were prearranged, the man and woman were still given a period to get to know each other.

Relationships Between Men and Women :Relationships Between Men and Women Women were considered as property of the man, rather than as family. Men took the job of caring for their wives very seriously.

Children in Jewish Society Compared to Today’s Society :Children in Jewish Society Compared to Today’s Society OLD JEWISH SOCIETY Children could be sold into slavery. Girls are less desirable than boys. Children could be killed. Children are considered a blessing. TODAY’S SOCIETY The idea of selling one’s children into slavery is absurd, if not non-existent. If a child is killed by his/her parents, it is murder. It does not matter what gender the child is because children are considered a blessing.

Women and Their Lives in Society :Women and Their Lives in Society Women didn’t eat with men, but rather while they were serving them. Women were restricted to certain parts of the Temple. Women had to keep a distance from men on the streets. Overall, women were considered inferior to men.

Women in the Past and Women Today :Women in the Past and Women Today WOMEN IN THE PAST Limited in many aspects of their lives (social, religious, and personal). Were treated as belongings and not as people. Women were not respected. WOMEN TODAY Have the same rights as men, for the most part. Are much more confident. Have a choice of who they marry.

Social Classes in the World of Jesus :Social Classes in the World of Jesus

The Rich and The Poor :The Rich and The Poor Social standing depended on money. There were very few rich and many poor, but no middle class in between. There were also those that were ‘very poor.’

Slavery During the Time of Jesus :Slavery During the Time of Jesus Slaves were much more popular among the Romans and Greeks. A Jewish slave was worth a lot less money than a pagan slave. Jesus did not greatly concern himself with the issue of slavery, but his message contradicted all of the arguments people used to justify slavery.

Different Groups of Jewish Society :Different Groups of Jewish Society How Jewish people were treated depended heavily on their job. Hard workers were treated with respect. Certain groups were hated or disliked, and as a result, they were excluded from the center of religious life. For example, mainline Jews deeply hated the Samaritans.

How Jesus Affected Jewish Society :How Jesus Affected Jewish Society Jesus` teachings greatly contradicted life of the Jewish society. Examples of this include: Jesus spoke openly with women. Jesus preached to Samaritans. Jesus made the lower classes of society his center of attention and scolded those with wealth who did not share it with the poor.

In Conclusion… :In Conclusion… Marriages were a great affair and were prearranged by the parents. Although all children were considered a blessing, girls were seen as worse than boys. Women of Jewish society had very few rights and were treated poorly. There were few rich and many poor, but nothing in between. Slavery was popular in the time of Jesus, but more for the Romans and Greeks than the Jews. Jesus was a man who contradicted the beliefs of the people at the time, and made the Jewish society rethink their ideas about certain groups. His teachings liberated those on the bottom of the social ladder, and he did his best to bring them equality.
