COGNITIVE PROCESS

HISTORY OF COGNITIVE PSYCHOLOGY:

HISTORY OF COGNITIVE PSYCHOLOGY Ulric Neisser coined the term "cognitive psychology" in his book Cognitive Psychology , published in 1965, wherein Neisser provides a definition of cognitive psychology characterizing people as dynamic information-processing systems whose mental operations might be described in computational terms. Also emphasising that it is a "point of view" that postulates the mind as having a certain conceptual structure.

COGNITION & COGNITIVEPSYCHOLOGY:

COGNITION & COGNITIVEPSYCHOLOGY COGNITION The mental processes that are involved in perception, attention, memory, problem solving, reasoning, and making decisions. COGNITIVE PSYCHOLOGY Branch of psychology concerned with the scientific study of cognition.

Cognitive Psychology  :

Cognitive Psychology Scientific study  of mental processes Simply consider “it is the study of thought” Behavior is examined by cognitive psychologists the same way that physicists infer the force of gravity from the behavior of objects in the world. Mental Processes: remembering, attention, producing and understanding language, solving problems, and making decisions Thinking is something that is constantly happening, yet we rarely stop to think about it

COGNITIVE PROCESSES  :

COGNITIVE PROCESSES Perception Is the process of receiving information about and making sense of the world around us. It involves deciding which information to notice, how to categorise this information and how to interpret it within the frame work of existing knowledge.

PERCEPTUAL PROCESS:

PERCEPTUAL PROCESS Sensation An individuals ability to detect stimuli in the Immediate environment. Selection The process a person uses to eliminate some of the stimuli that have been sensed and to retain others for further processing

ATTENTION:

ATTENTION Active attention is a multidimensional cognitive process that includes the ability to select and focus on what is important at any given moment. In other words, it is a complex process that includes feeling alert and aroused, selecting what we should be attending to, ignoring what we don’t want to attend to and maintaining our focus for the right amount of time.

PIAGET’S THEORY OF COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT:

PIAGET’S THEORY OF COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT Describe intellectual development according to Piaget , including a discussion of both the process and the stages of development. Note behavioral characteristics of each stage, describing how assimilation and accommodation are exemplified for each stage of development.

STAGES OF COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT:

STAGES OF COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT Piaget’s speaks of FOUR important stages of cognitive development: SENSORY MOTOR STAGE (0-2 YRS) PRE-OPERATIONAL STAGE (2-7YRS) CONCRETE OPERATIONAL STAGE (7-11 YRS) FORMAL OPERATIONAL STAGE(11YRS & ABOVE)
