Colonel Acland and Lord Sydney, 'The Archers', by Joshua Reynolds After entering the village and befriending a blacksmith Halfden searched the shoreline for a ship that would need an extra crewmen. Drew to a ship on the shore he commented that it was a work of art. The captain of the ship, Hastein, became curious with him and thought he would be entertaining as a new project. To prove himself Halfden suggested a contest of his ability with a bow with a member of Hastein’s crew. Later after greeting Hastein’s servant in the tongue of the Christian priest and winning the contest Hastein took him on to see if he could offer more entertainment.

John William Waterhouse's The Lady of Shalott, 1888 Instead of finding vengeance Halfden found a prisoner that he could use to gain riches or could cost him his life. Fighting in a foreign land against the enemy and other Vikings soon changed a young man into a warrior. It seemed every time he made a choice he set off a series of events that would either change or take his life. Each event seemed to take him to be judged before the head Viking who would hold Halfden’s life in his hands. He must prove himself to stay alive.
