Teaser trailer and Promotional Research :

Teaser trailer and Promotional Research By Gemma Lunney

Introduction:

Introduction To start my research for my teaser trailer I have decide to make this research PowerPoint making notes from the teasers I have watched and the poster campaigns I have found that went with the film, this should help give me some idea for my own production.

Slide 3:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5f-MYl-HzNw Toy story is a popular collection of films for the target audience of children. In the teaser trailer linked below it shows little about the film itself only the fact that its due to come out. It builds anticipation, as you can see that the characters are making something but you don’t know what. The logo they create out of toys is okay but once you see buzz's logo which is the traditional one. We see the look on woodies face like in previous movies. This is used to remind the audience of previous movies in the toy story saga which will make them want to go an see the film. The character interaction make the target audience fascinated an want to see the productions. Although toy story is a children film, the trailer doesn’t look to child like and simple. This make older people particularly parents think okay if I take them to see this I wont be to bored, and some parents would also enjoy the film anyway. Some older children and teens may also go to see it as they remember it from when they were young. Which is god when you have a trilogy. The idea of the teaser not relating to the move it self is good as it leave it up to the imagination what may happen this time, and also make you more interested to see the trailer. This may be a good idea for our own teaser trailer.

Slide 4:

I love this poster campaign, these where only a selection of the poster made for this film. The posters on either end of the row of picture show just one of the characters this will appeal to either the person who sees there favourite character. Or in gender the Buzz poster will appeal more to a young male audience and the Jessie poster a young female audience. The poster in the middle is generic and would be advertising somewhere where there would be a large range of different people, such as a London underground, parents may see it and think o f there children this will make them smile and may want to take them to see it. See shows me that for out production a good sold poster campaign with a range of themes will make a big diffrence.

Slide 5:

This trailer used high key lighting to show that it is a romantic film. Twice it used a birds eye view shot which was particularly effective when it was from down the spiral stairs, with a blue filter. This was a short trailer (about 30 seconds long) and had approximately 24 transitions. One in which was a fade transition, which I thought worked very well. I also liked the high angle shot of the female character, which gave her a look of innocence. I thought that the song choice for the trailer was good,. This trailer had a release date, however I do not feel that, this convention was a good idea for a teaser trailer. The pain poster is absolutely beautiful, the back ground has an abstract feel to it that makes the main guy look like he is starting to fade away, these blurred city lights bring out the colour in the characters. There positions are abstract as they look like they should be laying on the flow by the image has been rotated to the side which has created an interesting effect. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhhgIhdYHKU

Slide 6:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6hEaaKnEGU&feature=player_embedded Buried I don’t like this teaser trailer as much as some others I have seen, due to it lack of mystery its more like a very short theatrical trailer. This or maybe there just wasn’t enough interesting frottage in the film to make a full length theatrical trailer. The film is a thriller like my groups previous production we did last year. The film plot does look interesting , the music builds tension and suspense about the mans fate. The trailer does leave you with questions though which despite the teaser giving you half the plot isn't to bad. A teaser should leave you with a million and one questions to just a few like this one I think. The questions Buried leaves you with are only really how did he get in there? Does he get out? And how does he get out? For the genre the movies de saturated colour works well and will attract the target audience I believe would be young men and woman, in there early twenty's due to the young character and philological plot line. Although the film looks good itself there's not a lot of ideas I wish to take from this piece apart from making sure the music is up to scratch.

Slide 7:

The advertisement for this film was not very broad as you can see there wasn’t a lot of option. Which mean the production may no be advertised enough to make it a big hit. As the advertising of a production is the key aspect to make a film known to be in the cinema. Both poster are very similar using the same picture that are un varied. The difference in the texts make the one to the left more eye catching as people will see this big poster and see the same writing be curious and take a closer look unlike the poster above that is used to show more of expression and action to show what is going on more by being closer in to the face which is a blur.

Slide 8:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9W1dhqc-JBs The Last Airbender The trailer for this film doesn’t give the audience that much information about the plot or the characters only the main protagonist. The story is only what the narrator tells you. This creates intrigue. What is said only talks about the avatar and the history. The music itself tells a story of how hard the war has become the strong definite theme of music, creates drama and tension. As the mood of the music changes when we see the thousands of ships and worrier Scaling the mounting to attack a young boy the last Airbender. The title looks great as it represent the film showing the fire and air elements and how they will be a big part of the film. Also with the symbols for the four elements makes it look unique an make the audience curious so when we make our teaser trailer I must make sure to create a opening title to remember so that when the actual trailer is released it will be remembered and people will want to come see it.

Slide 9:

These are completely different advertising poster because the are aimed at different audiences, the one the left is aiming for an older audience It looks mysterious and highlights the M.Night Shyamalan the writer and director. This makes me think he is a big well known director and this would appeal to an older audience that may already know his work. The poster on the right show the good character (Aang) and the bad (zuko) this would appeal to younger people and older children who may have seen the cartoon series.

Slide 10:

Clover field This trailer is very unique as it is filmed with a hand held camera at all times and makes it unlike any other trailer or film. The use of close up shots is effective as it makes everything seem crowded and small spaced. The camera shakes, cuts out and fades to black to add impact to what is going on and makes the audience want to know what is happening when they can’t see it clearly. There is the use of irony, when one of the characters says: “It’s going to be the best night ever” this is effective because it turned out to be the opposite and shows that the events were totally unexpected. Also to show the panic there are lots of strange camera angles such as low angle shots to show that everyone is rushing and alarmed. The only thing to come up at the end of the trailer is the producer and writers names, however there is no announcement of the title yet which makes it intriguing and makes the audience want to find out more. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvNkGm8mxiM

Slide 11:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HilwtqaN4Gs Inception The teaser trailer for this piece has frequent cuts and transitions with bits of action sequences that are in the film. The whole sequence only lasts just over a minute, an shows little real solid clips most of what is shown can be changed. It has several captions in the trailer using short statements to spark interest. Very little actually happened. But the creators made this so that the audience, would recognise it when it eventually comes to cinemas. The audiences see a spinning top, spinning until it losses balance. This may represent the way the world appear in the film. There is no speaking or voice over, the music sets the tone and mood. this makes it clear who the target audiences is. Mainly adult between the ages of18-35, and particularly aimed at men more then woman due to all the action sequences which the genre is key for.

Slide 12:

Both of these campaign posters have similar concepts. They both have very desaturated colour showing the image to be dark. The poster is a coming soon one, this would have been made before finishing the film. So the creator properly still were not sure how they wanted it to be portrayed. That’s why there's a group and the quote is ‘the dream is real’ the idea of showing reality in a postmodern way stays the same in the poster to the right. But the quote an image changes. This image reminds me of I am legend, the appearance of being completely alone. In both poster the director is an important selling point as he has made other big films that have been a great success such as the dark night. The other person in key text is the key actor Leonardo deception who is also very famous, this will also be a big selling point on the film.

Slide 13:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ItK90yvA44&feature=player_embedded Transformers As we have see by the previous teaser trailers these piece shows little or no frottage from the film itself. I really enjoyed watching this teaser trailer as it linked events in real life to what is happens in the trailer this will spark attention because it’s a new concept to something in the past, that is relevant to a centenary modern film. What I have learned is that to make a good teaser trailer there should be little about the plot line. Using this trailer example for this, we see how a lot of captions are used more then anything else.

Slide 14:

All these posters are epic an show different aspects of the film and each represent the film different. I feel that all these poster are aimed at a similar age group, between 15-25 men mainly. The poster on the left hand side show an autobot that is looking over the world with an almost expressionless face. Shows drama, this makes him look like a guardian. The poster in centre tension we see the face of the desepticon robot that looks like its crawling its way out without even trying this shows the audience whom is the antagonist in the plot. The poster furthest to the right is more generic showing all the main characters. This gives a little bit more information then the other two. We can see the robots have come to earth from space and that there's several different types of these transformers this will attract anyone who that love sci-fi genre.

Slide 15:

This trailer begins in a slow paced. At the beginning the first shot is of the character’s feet to make it slightly ambiguous, however from the mise-en-scene and costumes it is very clear that the story is ‘Alice in Wonderland’. I also like the way in one of the first shots the scene is framed by tree leaves and branches as the character runs past. Also the low angle shot as the character is looking in to the hole in the ground, directly at the camera creates the impression that she is looking at the audience and makes them what to know what she has discovered. Then when she falls there is a great contrast between the change of music as it changes to very fast paced music to link in with what is happening in the scene. This trailer uses a focus pull to show the main object in the scene (the drink on the table). To show the character getting smaller there is the use of a high angle, which works very well. To show the weather conditions there is a blue tint to indicate that it is a cold night. To show the genre is a fantasy some characters are animated and sound effects to signify this genre are magic, twinkling sounds. I found the way the titles were shown was very individual as the Mad Hatter throws his hat and the titles appear inside his hat. The titles are gold and fairy tale like and when the dates come up the Cheshire cats eyes appear in the two 0s of ‘2010, with his smile underneath. This trailer has included a great deal of detail. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kkuvgxkcw2c

Slide 16:

Twilight Unlike other teasers we see a lot more footage unlike from the film then other teaser trailers. The characters in this are shown more of then some. This makes the audience drawn to them, as we know they are the hero and heroine. Sharp cuts and a mixed selection of locations give the audience a taster of the film and where and when its set due to costume also. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBvOhfL4mYw The short caption have a interesting effect, the font and overall look of the titles work well with the genre, and concept of the film. This is important to remember when creating my own titles. So that they look professional and so that they don’t appear odd or out of place.

Slide 17:

This magazine looks good and is another form of advertising. The image on the front is not from the film its self it’s a promotional image taken for the magazine. Although this is for the saga film. It still shows a lot of good advertising traits. The bold letting is eye catching and the whole image represent the film love, danger even down to the appear being a symbol for the book This is the most well know poster and image taken from the film aimed and teens and young adults and particular girls due to the romance. Edward looks as though he is leaning over to protect her this shows that she is delicate. She looks in love and this show a tension that creates drama.

Slide 18:

Up The teaser trailer shows literally the basic idea from the film. Its aimed a children we can see this from the animation and the saturated color makes it a happy atmosphere. The balloons at the start draws the eye into the trailer the bright colors, which make it eye catching. This is key when your audience is children's to create a happy persona. The concept of a house floating due to thousands of makes you laugh. The short amount of characters speech makes young people draw into the film, because the character is talking to the audience. When making a teaser you must make sure identify and target your intended audience which this film teaser trailer does brilliantly and effortlessly.

Slide 19:

I kept finding posters In French this leads me to believe it was quite big in France, and must have had a big release there. All the posters are very similar may be so that people who see more then one will recognise the bright sky background with any of the character or the house itself. The character poster of a little boy may appeal to young boys as he may be relatable which is key when creating a character. The poster in the centre is generic but show the hierarchy of the characters. The old man that is closest to the camera is the main protagonist. Then two other character leading up to the house are more like supporting character we see this due to the fact they a further away from the front of the image.

Slide 20:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_pPfw7e704 The Expendables The trailer for this appears to be on more of a look who's in it trailer. Once again there is little real solid film sequences. It has been cropped so that the trailer is sharp and with constant fast transitions. This is to show the audience the genre being action. From this we can see that the target audience is men of most ages over 16 and also those who may be fans of the actors in the movie. This would attract a lot of attention from current fans due to how big all of these stars are. This is also shown in the caption that appear through the sequence. Which emphasis the actors.

Slide 21:

The poster to the left has less reference to actors although it still states there names but the image emphasis the action theme and the male intended audience. The poster to the right has a male theme but relays more on the fact that you will recognise the actors faces other then there names the American flag on the background shows the country the poster is likely to be intended for. The main character is obviously Sylvester Stallone. Which means this poster will appeal to his fans and will make them want to see it.

Dear John :

Dear John I really like the way the trailer has several defining moments in the meeting and parting of the main characters there are lots of fading transitions in the part of the trailer when there at home together which makes it look very romantic.

Poster Campaign:

Poster Campaign Here are the posters made for the film they are all from moments from the film, this helps attract the audience to the film because they know what to expect to see to a certain degree. This also shows the beautiful locations and some romantic moments that will appeal to the audience

Slide 24:

In this teaser trailer there are many interesting shots. Some parts of the trailer are filmed through CCTV monitors which indicate that it is an action/ adventure film. The trailers pace increases when the robbers come in to the bank to make it appear very action packed along with faced pace music to add impact. When the helicopter gets stuck there is a lot of close up and extreme close up shots to create mystery as to what the helicopter has been stopped by. Then it zooms out to an establishing wide shot to show the full picture and it is made clear that a giant spiders web has stopped them and gives the audience an indication to what the film is. The captions are in metallic font to signify a sci-fi genre. There are a lot of interesting shot types such as high angle shots, which show spider mans movements. The captions are: “go for the ultimate spin” which relate to the film well and make it sound action filled. The title at the end has a spinning movement, which is interesting and also links in with the film. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-r7qymfa0Q

Slide 25:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNQ0ExXOWW0&feature=player_embedded The Da Vinci code This teaser trailer has no film clips, so it was obviously released before any of the footage was actually filmed. The whole teaser was made using CGI. It is exciting and enthralling despite this. So the teaser completely for fills its purpose. This film was the brilliant adaption form a bestselling book, this almost ensure it being successful. The trailer was exciting and will certainly stick in your mind Watch the trailer and see for yourself

Slide 26:

Here are two very different posters aimed at very different audiences the poster to the left represents the book, so this is aimed at people who may have read or head about the book or someone who is into fine art and will know of the painting, so appealing to someone a little more culture. Also after looking at the dates the poster on the left was created first which could mean this was made before the film was being shot. The second is more for the general public you have the obvious protagonist and the leading lady looking confused and frantic, this shows it an action genre.

Slide 27:

From this trailer there were a lot of shots that I thought were effective including: A long shot of the two characters sitting on a bench from behind; A close up of them holding hands and an engagement ring; the passing of time in one shot was shown by the scene being sped up from day to night; the use of split screen to show them in different locations at the same time; a close up of half of her face as she is laying down; there was the use of a focus pull; in one scene an establishing wide shot turned into a drawing; in another scene all of the other characters were wearing blue; an aerial shot and two shot as they are lying down; a close up filmed through a car window and a tilted aerial shot of the character. The film title was in different flashing colours, which was interesting. There was not any dialogue from the characters but instead a voice over from a narrator. This was effective because it doesn’t give too much of the story away. The lighting was high key and it ended with ‘coming soon’ at the end of the trailer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILCB_f0IIyI 500 day of summer

Slide 28:

There are a lot of shots during this trailer, The ‘20 th Century Fox’ logo appears in a newspaper and then the page changes to a news page relating to the story, which I found was interesting. I thought that it was effective how the character it telling the story and as she describes the characters there is a voice over on scenes of the characters as she is describing them. The pace of the film begins slow and then eventually becomes faster towards the end. Some parts of scenes were in black and white, which was effective in showing that the scene was from the past. There were also some fade transitions, which worked very well. The character cracked his whip and the titles appear. The titles had the shape of the country Australia behind them, which linked in well with the film. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YiEkFvVxpVY

Slide 29:

Here are several posters made for the film, once again we see the convention of the main characters on the poster and there being just a close up of there faces showing emotions. All three posters look exciting, saturated colours create this effect. This poster would probably be for a billboard, as its the length. The three images show the romance and action during the film.

Slide 30:

The Proposal This teaser trailer is shot in high key lighting. This is a good signifier that the genre is a romantic comedy. It uses two establishing wide shots of two different locations to show the drastic change in places. To catch the audience’s attention when there is a comical moment, the music stops so therefore it stands out. One particular shot that I thought was good was a low angle shot with an aeroplane flying past and then ‘From Touchstone Pictures’ appears. There are a lot of fade to white transitions used, which is effective in showing that it is a romantic comedy. The trailer also featured a wipe transition, which was interesting. Sound effects included punching sounds, which indicates that they don’t get on well. The trailer ended with coming soon. http://www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi125895193/

Slide 31:

Valentines Day In this trailer there are a lot of fade to white transitions to show that the film is a romantic comedy. The titles appear in red as a connotation for romance, with an establishing wide shot of the city to show the location and a red balloon flies past to signify Valentine’s Day. When the characters are on the pane, close up shots are used to show that they are in a small space. The characters appear in half sections on the screen with credits. This is effective in attracting an audience as this film features many well-known actors and actresses. A shot that I found interesting was an aerial shot when the marching band formed a heart shape and then ‘Of Love’ Appears in the centre. Captions include: “Save The Date” followed by ‘February 2010. http://whttpww.youtube.com/watch?v=3BPuK606bdQ

Slide 32:

Valentines day Poster campaign Here are some of the posters made for the film what I find really interesting is how in each country they make changes to the poster, primarily keeping the same theme but changing a lot of other aspects to it like the colours and layout, perhaps to be able to re a just the text properly. Doing posters for different languages might help me understand more why these changes are made.

Slide 33:

To add effect to the accident in this film, there is the use of low-key lighting. The close up of the car wheels as it breaks give a good indication of what is happening. The close up of her face and then a fade to white give a clear suggestion that she has either died or gone in to a comma. This trailer uses fade to black shots to show that it is a fantasy and creates mystery. Special effects include a slight transparency of the character to show that she is a ghost and the character being able to walk through things. There is a shot of the city above the clouds that links in with the references to heaven and ghosts and also gives indications to locations. There were a few over the shoulder shots and a particularly interesting shot was an aerial shot of the character spinning around. The song featured in this trailer was Just Like Heaven by The Cure, which was a good choice as it is also the title of the film. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mRC-LAIs6to

Slide 34:

The beginning of this trailer is very interesting as it begins by zooming out from clock works through to a keyhole, then through door in to clouds. There is the use of low-key lighting to show that is has an adventure and mystery theme to it. There is a good use of sound effects to show the cold weather conditions, which include an exaggerated wind sound. There are a lot of special effects such as a man walking through a mirror on fire to indicate that it is a fantasy genre. The fact that some locations and characters seem animated shows this as well. To show status and power, high and low angle shots were used. A shot that I found interesting was when there was an over the shoulder shot of the character and then the reflection in the mirror of the other character. Interesting transitions included a bright light to the next scene http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRhGAVXjYfQ

Slide 35:

I feel that this teaser trailer is good at attracting its target audience, which would be women, as the mise-en-scene and costumes are of what most women would want to have and be themselves. Such as the expensive clothes and glamorous locations. The transitions are fade to whites and the lighting is high key to show that it is a romantic comedy. To show the location that the film is set in there are establishing wide shots of the city at night and panning. Sound effects include camera flashes. The captions say : “Get Carried Away” this is a play on words and people that are familiar with the characters from watching the TV series will realise as main character is called Carrie. The titles are pink and sparkly to attract the intended audience.

Slide 36:

The trailer begins with a girl playing the piano on the stage and in this beginning sections the shots are a lot longer in comparison to the second half which are extremely shorter and faster paced. The transitions here are interesting as they fade into one and other. The first half consists mainly of high key lighting as it is representing rehearsal time, whereas in the second half there is a lot of low key and unnatural lighting used to represent stage lighting. There were extreme close ups and close up shots of instruments to make it slightly unclear at times as to what instruments they were. There were a lot of silhouettes used which was another signifier to the location of a theatre and stage along with the theatre lights sound effects. I thought it was clever how they formed the titles from zooming out of an aerial shot to one of many small bulbs in the title. This title was also effective as it is well recognisable. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mD02Aj1HIE

Slide 37:

The Dark Knight I feel that this is an interesting teaser trailer, as it has no footage from the film apart from dialogue. It begins with a black background with flashes of blue light. This makes the audience want to know who is speaking and what the film is. Eventually, more light comes through to reveal the batman logo. At this point most people would recognise the logo as it is well known and know that the film was based on batman. Pieces of the logo start smashing and flying off. The final piece turns over to reveal a joker card so the audience get an idea that the joker will play a big part in the film. This is effective as it does not give any clips from the film away but manages to give signifiers to the audience so they have some ideas to what the film will be based on. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWw0ov-cAUg

Slide 38:

These are just som e of the posters made for the dark n ight go to the next page for more

Slide 39:

There was a lot of interesting posters for this film none were direct images from the film, this gives the posters the opportunity to be more creative and create different effects. I also like how the villain has been brought out to centre stage in the posters to show his importance.

Slide 40:

In order to signify that this is a drama/thriller there is the use of fade to blacks and low-key lighting. A shot that I found interesting was a shot through a window. It also used an extreme close up of the blood on the carpet to show that it was an important feature in the story. There was also a high angle shot to show the vulnerability of the character in the woods. The pulse sound effect created tension and increased as the trailer got more action packed like an actual heart beat or pulse. I also liked the way it ended on a cliff hanger which I think is good as it will make viewers want to know what happens next and doesn’t give too much of the plot away unlike some other trailers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYBF3HKzrmE
