Then, when food is hard to find, camels live off the stored fat. A hump of a well fed camel can weigh 80 pounds. A camel chews food twice. First, it swallows partly chewed plants. The food is kept in one part of its stomach. Later, this food called cud, is brought back up, chewed carefully, and then swallowed again. A camel can live without water more than five times as long as a person can. When a camel drinks water it can swallow more than 127 quarts of water in about 10 minutes. If a camel cannot find freshwater, it can drink salty water. A Camels Family: A Camels Family Bactrain camels usually travel through the Gobi desert in herds of about ten, led by the strongest male.
