Premium member Presentation Transcript AMERICAS’ NETWORK FOR CHRONIC DISEASES: AMERICAS’ NETWORK FOR CHRONIC DISEASES Networking opportunity to share information and practical experiences, and to strength chronic diseases surveillance in the AmericasBackground: Background In August 2002, a training course in Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) surveillance was held at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for Latin America participants. During this training course, the desire was very strong among participants to form a Network for the purposes of sharing information and experiences, as well as opportunities for enhancing NCD surveillance in the Americas.Continuation... background: Continuation... background This course was useful to join the participants of Latin American countries in one common vision to improve the surveillance of Chronic Diseases The Network at the time made up of 20 individuals from 15 countries and, at the present, has grown to 76 individuals from 22 countries. Progress to Date : Progress to Date Members of the Network has been sharing several documents and information on chronic disease surveillance, prevention and control The Network has held several telephone conferences and has an official website for the members with the support of the CDCContinuation...Progress to Date : Continuation... Progress to Date Network is working in its organization A Planning Committee was set up, with representation from Canada, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama, Peru, USA and Venezuela. The first face-to-face meeting for the Planning Committee was held in Atlanta, USA at CDC from 21-23 November, 2002Continuation...Progress to Date : Continuation... Progress to Date Several working groups are now working on: Mission, vision and strategic planning Structure of organization Inter-institutional relationships To explore funds’ sources Thematic areas of chronic diseasesProposed Mission: Proposed Mission To promote and to make a dynamic interchange of information, to channel and to make up efforts to contribute to the development of surveillance, prevention and control of chronic diseases and its risk factors in the Americas, focused on surveillance, sharing information and experiences, developing programs, projects and research, with the participation of national authorities, agencies of international cooperation, nongovernmental organizations, the private sector and independent experts.Proposed Vision: Proposed Vision To constitute itself in an accessible and efficient resource, with international recognition, for the dynamic interchange of information to channel and to integrate efforts of experts and governmental, private and independent, national and international organizations, in surveillance, prevention and control of chronic diseases and its risk factors in the Americas, focused on surveillance.Objectives: Objectives 1. Develop and maintain a network of key contacts between people and organizations who work or are interested in the surveillance, prevention and control of the chronic diseases and its factors of risk in the Americas. 2. Facilitate the interchange, collection, organization and dissemination of scientific information and experiences about the surveillance, prevention and control of chronic diseases and its risk factors. 3. Advocate for surveillance, prevention and control of chronic diseases and its risk factors in the Americas.Continuation...objectives: Continuation... objectives 4. Promote and support the training in surveillance, prevention and control of chronic diseases and its risk factors. 5. Channel resources and participate to give technical assistance in research, projects and programs of surveillance, prevention and control of chronic diseases and its risk factors. 6. Facilitate the integration of efforts and contribute in the implementation, development and evaluation of projects, programs and research in surveillance, prevention and control of chronic diseases and its risk factors.Members: Members Individuals that belong to governmental or nongovernmental organizations (NGO), universities, foundations, associations, societies, centers or private companies who work or are interested in the surveillance, prevention or control of chronic diseases and its risk factors, are compromised to promote and to contribute to the progress of the mission and vision of the Network, with great expectation on commitment and participation.Members: Members At present the Network have members from: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Espana, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, United States of America, Uruguay, VenezuelaObjectives Network’s Conference in 2003: Objectives Network’s Conference in 2003 1. Identify the current situation of chronic diseases surveillance in the Americas. 2. Learn from successful experiences and initiatives. 3. Identify the principal problems and barriers for the implementation of chronic disease surveillance in the Americas. 4. Provide recommendations for the implementation of those potential solutions. 6. Identify the assets for the implementation of chronic disease surveillance in the Americas. 7. Stimulate surveillance efforts of chronic diseases in the Americas. 8. Provide practical tools to participants to contribute to increase the capacity to conduct and support chronic diseases surveillance at the local, regional and countrywide levels. 9.
