A Little Bit of History

Slide14:

When a Greek official tried to force a priest named Mattathias to make a sacrifice to a pagan god, the priest refused by killing a cooperating priest and then killed the Greek. The Jews rose up behind Mattathias and his five sons and fought for their liberation. The family of Mattathias is known as the Maccabees or the Hasmoneans. In 164 BC, Jerusalem was recaptured by the Maccabees and the Temple purified, an event that gave birth to the holiday of Chanukah. In the year 142 BC, after more than 500 years of subjugation (since 586 BC), the Jews were free.
