Context Project began December 2002 Project Objectives: Implement a collection registry of digital collections created or developed with funding from IMLS NLG program Use OAI-PMH to implement an item-level metadata repository for content objects contained in NLG collections Carry out associated research related to: Utility and usability of Registry & Repository Current metadata practices of IMLS NLG grantees Implications for interoperability (Framework of Guidance for Building Good Digital Collections)

Current Research: 

Current Research Collection identity in digital collections isn’t the same as in real life collections. Shareable metadata that works outside of the original context and is consistent is most valuable and able to be aggregated. How does collection identity affect a digital object? How do people search for digital items, and how do we show them the collections they come from? (Richard)

Why Would Museums Be Interested?: 

Why Would Museums Be Interested? See what their peer institutions are doing. Not repeat projects others have done. Get traffic to their site Audience of federated collection might not know about their site Marketing of federated collection brings new people with no extra work for them Assist users in finding individual items from many collections in one place, preferably themed. Show users, through finding one matching item that there is a whole collection of interest to them. Aggregators can add value to records (i.e. education)
