Letter To The Readers:

Letter To The Readers ENGLCOM WC is a course offered in De La Salle University that teaches students everything there is know in essay writing, such as the skills in basic essay writing, as well as different styles of essay writing. This portfolio contains a compilation of essays that I wrote in this class to show the improvement and progression on the start of term, until the end of the term.

Bullying (Entrance Essay):

Bullying (Entrance Essay) Bullying is a type of act that is considered a social issue. It can occur to anyone at any given time. Bullying has a lot of types/forms, such as; Cyber bullying, verbal abuse, physical abuse, and the like. These types of bullying degrade a person’s wellbeing in a lot of ways. The person may experience depression, lack of confidence, insecurities and others. This may not always be seen in everyday life, but it does happen quite frequently whether we are aware of it or not. Bullying happens more often in most school settings. The “weaker” students would often encounter abuses from the “stronger” students, most especially if they come in groups. The most common type of bullying is verbal bullying, usually called as “just a joke”. Cyber bullying is next, because this type of bullying can occur “anonymously” in just one click. Physical abuses have a lower percentage of occurring, because it is considered and assumed to be “risky”. Say NO to bullying. Not only does it degrads a person’s being, but it is also a violation of human rights. In extreme causes, it also leads to suicide rates. A person shouldn’t step on other people, let alone be stepped on by others. We are all unique in our own little ways, and we should accept one another if we want to be accepted by one another.

The Beauty In Art: Music (ExtendedDefinitionEssay):

The Beauty In Art: Music ( ExtendedDefinitionEssay ) Art is the product of human activities, primarily focusing on entertainment. The nature of it is through creativity and interpretation. It is the product of the human mind and its’ emotions. It is a form of a freedom to express emotions, as well as a form of communicating. It may be verbal or non-verbal. With the use of the five human senses, art can be found literally everywhere.   Art can be expressed in a number of ways. One would be visual arts, an art form that uses nature as a basis for visual content such as paintings, sculptures, crafts, photography, video/filmmaking, and architecture. This type of art does not have to strictly follow a set of rules or norms; it is based on how the artist visually interprets his or her own artwork. Another would be conceptual art, which is basically the art of conceptualism or conceptualizing. Textile art is another example, which uses fibers to craft and construct decorative designs. Applied art is the design of everyday objects, such as teacups, coffee mugs and dinner plates. With all these different art forms or art styles, they can all be associated with one another.   Performing arts are art forms that are performed with the use of the human body. It can be performed by bodily movements such as dancing, or through the use of vocals such as singing. Another example would be theater or acting, which uses both bodily movements and vocals. This is to show artistic expression, emotions included. Participants in perform arts are called performers, though performers may vary. There are performers such as actors, singers, dancers and the like.

The Beauty In Art: Music (ExtendedDefinitionEssay):

The Beauty In Art: Music ( ExtendedDefinitionEssay ) Theater is a type of performing or a collaborative art that involves a cast of people in character that would act out to and in front of a crowd of people or audience a particular story, letting them experience fictional or non-fictional scenes/events. This uses the following traits: background music that matches the mood of the story, sound effects, speeches or dialogues, choreographed movements and stage-crafts that helps amplify the emotion and experience of the story being presented.   Musical Theater is one of the most common type theater being shown everywhere nowadays. This involves songs, dialogues, acting, and choreographed movements/dances being combined into the whole duration of the show. The emotional aspect of the story is being channeled towards the viewers in the form acting through the use of speeches/dialogues, along with music and choreographed movements/dancing. Other types of theater may include: Stand-up comedy, operas, and others.   Dance is a type of art the solely focuses on bodily movements, accompanied by rhythm/beat of the music. It is a way for different cultures to express emotion, a form of social interaction, or an exercise, in spiritual or performance/competitive setting, and it may also describe a story behind the dance. It is a form of non-verbal communication, not only humans can express it but even animals. Music is my favorite, as I will now focus on this type of art. Music is that one type of art that an average person like me cannot go through a day without. Music can be heard literally almost everywhere, whether people are actually aware of it or not. Music is an art form based on sounds. Its’ key elements are: Pitch, which gives the melody and harmony. As well as rhythm, which includes the tempo. The creation, performance and significance of music are solely based on culture. It can either be organized compositions or improvisational music. The difference between different types of music is how people interpret it. Such as if music being danced to, then that is dancing. If music is being sung to, then that is singing. It can also be divided into art music, and folk music .

Religious purposes, music being played and sang in churches as a form of worshipping different religions. Production, which includes compositions, notations, and improvisation. Media, technology, and businesses that includes commercials, CD albums being sold, entertainment and the like. Music being used as an educational aid. Music therapy, how music is commonly used.   Art music is a type of music that involves both contemporary and historical classic music form. Traditional music or “folk music” is a type of music that has been passed on to generations after generations. Popular music is the type of music that is accessible by anyone, anywhere, and anytime. This can be found on any type of media such as radio stations, televisions and the like. Popular music is often and most commonly found in CDs and/or electronic devices such as iPods, mp3 players and others. Songwriters, composers, producers and artists do all this.

The Beauty In Art: Music (ExtendedDefinitionEssay):

The Beauty In Art: Music ( ExtendedDefinitionEssay ) Music therapy is associated to popular music. It is an interpersonal process in which music is being used to help maintain emotional and mental statuses healthy. This therapy is used to people with serious cases such as: psychiatric disorders, medical problems, substance abuses, communication disorders and interpersonal problems. It improves learning capacities, build self-esteem, and reduce stress. It also helps in physical fitness, as the beat of the music is felt when exercising that makes person adjust his/her body tempo.   The list of different music genres goes on forever, with genres being found from time to time in different parts of the world. It all depends on the person’s mood, preferences and/or purpose on a chosen music genre.   Music is like a way of life. The way I see it, it is like an indirect way of communicating with each other. Music can help a person go through so many challenges in life, through the good times and bad memories. It is like the life support that we all need, whenever we are faced with difficulties, downfall moments or roadblocks along the way. Not only the bad times, but music also creates good memories. With each lyric being sang and with every beat being played beautifully by various instruments, it is like entering a different world where everything can easily fall into place. It is a form of expression one’s feelings, like an outlet that everyone needs once in a while. Though it can be listened to without having reason or a purpose, just out of pure enjoyment or entertainment.

The Beauty In Art: Music (ExtendedDefinitionEssay):

The Beauty In Art: Music ( ExtendedDefinitionEssay ) “The efforts of the creator and the interpreter of music are wasted if there is no listener to enjoy the result, as the gorgeous colors of a sunset actually do not exist except in the delighted eyes of the human spectator. The enjoyment of music is an instinct, practically as common as the enjoyment of food, at least in the animal known as man. The ‘common sense of music’ is literally a feeling shared normally by all human beings, and this common sense can be developed into an actually art of enjoyment through the simple process of listening. Most people have been satisfied with their instinctive response to music, making no effort to find out why a certain rhythm or melody or harmony exerts a particular appeal. They are like an average man who eats mechanically, with definite satisfaction, often distinct pleasure, yet without any attempt to analyze the appeal of the food set before him. There are even some established music-lovers who go to concerts and sit a comfortable coma, a luscious lethargy, coming out of it from time to time to applaud politely, but actually not listening to the music at all. With all their concert experience, they have not yet discovered just what to listen for .”   “ The music-lover can almost make an art of listening, regardless of personal skill or training. Sharing every detail of performance, instead of responding only to an obvious beauty of tone or brilliance of technique.”

Manila Traffic (Argumentative Essay):

Manila Traffic (Argumentative Essay) The metropolis has an extensive system of highways connecting various cities and municipalities estimated to measure 5092 kilometers. Of this total 1087 kilometers are national roads; 2366 kilometers are city, municipal, or barangay roads; 1639 kilometers are subdivision roads; and 37 kilometers are privately run toll expressways. Metro Manila is notorious for traffic jams with trips emerging speeds as low as 6 to 8 kilometers per hour. This is one of Metro Manila’s biggest headaches. Everywhere we go, we will eventually encounter being stuck in a traffic jam. The day basically starts with a traffic jam, and ends with a traffic jam.   A trip that would usually take 20 minutes will last an hour or more. Rush hours do not have specific timeframes anymore, and traffic during rainfall increases. It also doubles during holidays, weekends, especially paydays! Not only that, people suddenly disregard traffic rules and regulations in these types of situations, as well as number coding schemes have no effect at all. Public utility vehicles tend to randomly stop at any given time to pick up or drop off a passenger at any given place, which causes a great amount of inconvenience to almost all of the motorists. We experience this problem everyday, on the way to every destination.

Manila Traffic (Argumentative Essay):

Manila Traffic (Argumentative Essay) This headache could be lessened, if not avoided, only if we do not allow it to be troublesome or chaotic. It happens because we allow it to happen. Imposing much stricter and more reasonable rules and regulations will help shape the behavior of a motorist into better and safer roadways. This will then allow motorists to get used to what is right and what should be done properly. In cases of an honest mistake, adding properly labeled and positioned/placed traffic signs will help clear the misunderstanding of some motorists on their unfamiliar route/destination. In addition, traffic enforces should avoid the “catch me if you can” approach of violators at all costs.   It is all about the behavior of each and every individual that are on public roads. If one person does something wrong and gets away with it, others will follow. If one person does something right, others will still follow. The knowledge and privilege of traffic enforces should be fully utilized and not abused. Manila traffic is not uncontrollable; it is uncontrolled.

Inequality (Exit Essay):

Inequality (Exit Essay)   Inequality is being in the state of not being even or the root word “equal” itself, between two things or two sides. Inequality is one of the most common among all social issues that exist anywhere and at any given time. It affects the person greatly, most likely in terms of psychological misbehavior or abuse. There are few types of inequality examples, such as gender, sex, preferences, religion, race, age and the like.   Gender inequality is the unequal treatment based on the biological features of the human body. It revolves around the different physical capabilities of both the two genders, such as gender roles and gender stereotyping may possibly exist too. It is the natural occurrence that there are things only the male can do, and things that only the females can do. The discriminations among physical gender-variants, transgendered people and same-sex preferences also exist.   Racial inequality, also known as racism, is the distinction between groups in society, based on physical characteristics or features, as well as origin and cultural background. The unequal treatment in this social issue is that, some may consider themselves superior than others based on their race. This may sometimes be seen in job opportunities, such that some employers are biased not on credibility, but based on race, culture, background, origin and possibly religion too.

Inequality (Exit Essay):

Inequality (Exit Essay) Age inequality is the unequal treatment based on age, such as maturity, physical capabilities, educational attainment, resources, stereotyping, discrimination of generation/s, privileges and the like. It may be considered or called as “seniority” in some cases. It is the difference between beliefs, culture, norms, education, and values. This may sometimes be dangerous between the legal aged group and the under aged group, such as peer pressure from the elderlies.   Class inequality is the unequal treatment based on the financial capabilities of a person. Lower, middle, and upper class are considered as the three main groups in this social issue. It is basically a person’s “status” in life, based on wealth. It makes room for prestige and access to privileges. It is all because capital resources vary, which will adjust a person’s position or ranking in this social issue. This is to determine stability of everyday life.   We are all humans and we are all unique in every sense. If we want to be treated fairly, we have to treat others the same way as how we wanted to be treated. These are basically human rights violations. We are of the same species, we deserve to be treated equally and fairly .

Reflective Essay:

Reflective Essay Back in High School, contractions such as “they’re, it’s, don’t, there’s, I’m” and the like are very well accepted in anything essay related. After taking up ENGLCOM in my first year and first term in De La Salle University, I learned that these are not accepted because these contractions are informal. Picking up the pace, I quickly learned without difficulty to never use contractions ever again. I also learned in ENGLCOM that with each reading component I would encounter, there is always some sort of meaning behind each paragraph. Such as one paragraph contains the problem itself already, the next paragraph would contain the solution. It is now easier for me to analyze/examine any reading component, and quickly pinpoint which of the paragraphs would contain the background deeper meaning of what the author is talking about.

Reflective Essay:

Reflective Essay I encountered a few problems with my Extended Definition Essay, mainly a bad case of writer’s block. At first, I was not sure and I did not know which general topic to choose from because we were given the freedom to choose literally any topic there is out there, to talk about on the essay. After I finally got to choose a topic, I did not really understand the instruction to write “general to specific” topics. I chose the topic “art” which contained a big number of topics to choose from, so I was finally able to choose the art form “music” as my specific topic. Last but not the least problem I encounter was basically the research part of the essay. I was not sure and I did not know which general topics to choose from, so I just picked out my favorite types of art. In the end, I was able to successfully talk about my specific topic and completed my Extended Definition Essay. I did not encounter any major problem with my Argumentative Essay, because the topic I chose “Manila Traffic” basically already contained very broad key components such as a background, problem/s, solution/s, and evaluation.

Reflective Essay:

Reflective Essay   For the entry and exit essays that I have written, I can definitely say that I have improved after taking up ENGLCOM in my first year and first term in De La Salle University. The way I make essays now is more organized, detailed and reader friendly. I also achieved the objectives of the portfolio, because I successfully compiled all my essays throughout the whole duration of the first term. ENGLCOM taught the basics and the right way or reading and writing, which I will most definitely be needing everything in the long run as an Organizational Communication student, especially for ENGLRES next term, if I am not mistaken .

Sidewalk (Documentary Analysis):

Sidewalk (Documentary Analysis) Thesis: The documentary film showed the effects of poverty, such as unemployed street vendors.   Introduction on who vendors are and what they do A brief description of the sidewalk vendors in the documentary My thoughts and opinions about the vendors in the documentary The documentary showed the effects of poverty To describe why they are unemployed and the effects of unemployment To describe how I feel about unemployment The documentary involved the government’s viewpoint on street vendors. To describe what the government should or shouldn’t do To describe my view towards the government’s viewpoint Conclusion: My thoughts and opinions on how to lessen poverty .

Sidewalk (Documentary Analysis):

Sidewalk (Documentary Analysis) A vendor sells goods and products not necessarily at a fix price, but in a price that buyers or customers can and may bargain for. In the movie “sidewalk”, a research product by Mitch Duneier in Princeton University, showed vendors that solely position themselves in sidewalks or streets to sell their goods, specifically discarded books. These street vendors would wake up very early in the morning to hunt for discarded books that are still sellable, live the rest of their lives in the street selling these discarded books, look for something to eat and look for a spot to sleep on until the next day comes and repeat. It is very good that the documentary clearly showed this type of daily routine, specifically how the street vendors lived their lives, as well as explaining how they hunt for discarded books and how they check if these discarded books are still sellable, giving the viewers knowledge on how they work as street vendors. The different lighting in switching scenes between day and night was very good.   These street vendors mentioned about their past lives, and how their lives ended up to where they are now, at present. Some of them finished a sufficient amount of education, but only to get fired from work all because the got involved in the “cut-off” of releasing employees, and they could not find any work any after that incident. With these, they are forced to work as street vendors instead. Living their lives in poverty, homeless with very little food to eat everyday. It is good that the documentary showed this, to give the viewers an idea on why they are living as street vendors. The way they talked (voice/tone) in the documentary made them sound like they are happy with how they are living in the streets.

Sidewalk (Documentary Analysis):

Sidewalk (Documentary Analysis) The government said that these street vendors are merely eyes sores scattered everywhere in the streets. Donating money to them only convinces them to stay homeless. In my opinion, that’s actually true. They become dependent towards the donations from the government. If I may suggest what the government can do to help these street vendors, is to open a wide variety of job opportunities for them and pay them monthly salaries. It is a huge a plus for the documentary to involve the government with regards to this type of poverty, for the government has the power to help those in need, such as these street vendors.   A few suggestions/ways to lessen poverty. Lessen the behavior that leads to poverty, which goes to the saying “there is no free lunch”. Instead of people asking for donations from the government, they should be asking for the government to give them job opportunities. This also goes with saying “give a man a fish, he will live for a day, but teach him how to fish, he will live for a long time” or something like that. Simple ways such as convincing these homeless people to perhaps, ask them to clean/sweep the dry/dead leaves off your garden and paying them for the day gives them the courage to actually work for themselves. The documentary definitely opened my eyes to the idea of living in poverty, how to lessen the people living in poverty, for the benefit not only for the country’s people, as well as for the benefit of the country itself.
