Race vs. Ethnic : 

Race vs. Ethnic What is racial discrimination compared to ethnic discrimination? Race is defined "a group of people of common ancestry, distinguished from others by physical characteristics such as hair type, color of eyes and skin, stature etc". (Collins English dictionary). Ethnic is defined as "relating to or characteristic of a human group having racial, religious, linguistic and certain other traits in common". (Collins English dictionary).

Socialization within the School : 

Socialization within the School Three main forms are seen: 1. Official Curriculum 2. Social Curriculum 3. Hidden Curriculum

Official Curriculum : 

Official Curriculum Content and goals expressed by teachers. Accumulated skill and knowledge are passed down from one generation to the next.(Cultural, Heritage) Challenges family socialization

Social Curriculum : 

Social Curriculum Social behaviors learned. Gender role expands. Interaction with peers. These are learned through a variety of situations.

Hidden Curriculum : 

Hidden Curriculum Learning guidelines and rules. Reinforcement both positive and corrective in the classroom by teachers or administrators. Example: listening and respecting authority figures other than parents or guardians.

Impact of Discrimination (Racial and Ethnic) felt by Students : 

Impact of Discrimination (Racial and Ethnic) felt by Students Huge affect on student socialization. This is evident with poorer physical as well as mental health. The education aspect as well as extra curricular socialization is also affected. Discrimination can be seen in a variety of ways. The opportunities for students who are discriminated upon are usually not as high as those who are not.

High School Based Racial Discrimination Impact Personal racial discrimination often occurs in a school setting. Class room and social structure diverse. Racially bias treatment within the classroom by teachers or in peer settings. Lower self-esteem related to racial discrimination which can lead to stress, distress, and behavioral problems through out their education.

High School Based Racial Discrimination Impact Continued School Disidentification Psychological disengagement with school A coping strategy used to protect self confident in certain situations they may encounter. Engagement affected for students with academics as well as interscholastic sports. Teacher/classroom interactions impact.

Identity Development in Adolescence in High School Four main identity statues: Diffuse Foreclosed Moratorium Achieved

Diffuse Foreclose : 

Diffuse Foreclose Little exploration or active consideration of a field No psychological commitment Commitment made to a belief or to take on a role Most often parental decision without alternatives

Moratorium Achieved : 

Moratorium Achieved Active exploration of beliefs or roles. Still no commitment made. Strong personal commitment to certain dimension of identity. High exploration.

Athletics and Coaching in relation to Discrimination and Socialization : 

Athletics and Coaching in relation to Discrimination and Socialization Talking and getting to know players. Chemistry between teammates and the team overall is vital to success. Socialize on and off the playing fields/courts. Trickle affect within the team to their fans and family.

Athletic Mascot : 

Athletic Mascot Mascots College level vs. High School. Native American Names. Views of parents and symbols. History of past and looking to the future.

Future of the Impact of Racial and Ethnic Socialization : 

Future of the Impact of Racial and Ethnic Socialization Socialization among the high school students and adolescence will still continue. Racism and ethnic discrimination will still be a concern in many areas. More studies and improvements on athletic teams and high school setting to make the impact lesser or more positive.
