Optical Illusions:

Optical Illusions The b rain and the eye together can sometimes be a lie. By: Kim Combs

What it is:

What it is Optical illusions can range from size differences, light tricks, color tricks, and another variety of others. These squares are the same color.

What Happens::

What Happens: When the brain takes in an image of patterns, it is processing sections and assumes that the rest will be similar. Optical illusions that have high detail or graphics, the brain gets confused when the image appears to change right in front of it.

What Happens Cont.:

What Happens Cont . The brain gets confused because the eye sight is made up of spots of pictures put together. The eye will take in a spot that is the size or a dime multiple times of one image, the brain then puts the spots together to make one whole image. When the brain is putting the new spots with the older ones, the new ones look different: the brain stops and says “ woah , when did that get there?”

Terminology:

Terminology The part of the eye that takes in the dimes sized spots is called the Fovea . The process in the brain of putting the spots together is called Saccades .

Other Kinds…:

Other Kinds… Another topic the brain has troubling processing is the size of objects (usually depending on their surroundings). When two similar lines or shapes are next to each other in an illusion, a good assumption to take that they are the same size or color.

Examination:

Examination The previous pictures shown were examples of the illusion of size. The reason these images look the way they do is because surrounding them are other objects that change one’s perception. In the far right, we see two spheres; they are the same size, the reason the one higher looks bigger is because it appears to be further away. Same with the middle, the man shape is higher and seems further. The one on the left shows the two lines that are the same size and the two center dots that are the same size.

PowerPoint Presentation:

Lets look at two of the pictures again, but changed… Conclusion: The trick to the size illusions is the surrounding area.

“Not Just Your Imagination”:

“Not Just Your Imagination” Researchers in Japan conducted studies on how the brain perceives illusions (like the moving snakes) as real motion. The researchers believed that illusions stimulated the part of the brain that held imagination; they found, however, that it stimulates the “’bottom-up’ process in the visual cortex.” The “bottom-up process” is the action in the brain the makes you think the image is moving.

“Not Just Your Imagination,” Cont.:

“Not Just Your Imagination,” Cont. Because our Visual Cortex sees this as movement, it is possible for some to get motion sickness as if it were real. Hint: This illusion works best when not directly looking at it…

Conclusion:

Conclusion Illusions have a great effect on the brain and what we see. This effect may go away with evolution or it may hold as a part of our original make up. Either way, you probably won’t forget the feeling from looking into a non-moving spiral or seeing a picture within a picture.
