Slide7:

Limited learning choices Small number of learners therefore provider sustainability difficulties Considerable travel to alternative provision Some learners travel far to access their desired learning Challenges of providing learning bilingually; Very small sixth form Providers compete in some subjects The Dyfi Valley – microcosm of challenges in rural Wales:

Slide8:

The changing face of education in Wales All 14-19 year olds to be offered: A wider choice of learning – academic, vocational, informal and non-formal; More support – a learning coach, personal support as well as impartial careers advice and guidance More use of the baccalaureate – an overarching qualification Is the Dyfi Valley learning system able to meet this challenge?

Slide9:

Examples of other options considered… Do nothing – managed decline Various collaborative arrangements Change primary catchment areas Change linguistic nature of YBD Join Meirionnydd tertiary system/Aberystwyth catchment area

Slide10:

Doing nothing is not an option for young people About 40% of 6th formers go to other schools; Local 6th form class sizes too small to be ‘acceptable learning experience’; YBD sixth form is the most expensive per capita across Wales and receives a significant subsidy; Deliverability of 14 – 19 agenda in area questionable.

Slide11:

Uncoordinated adult community learning leading to wasteful duplication Courses frequently cancelled due to insufficient numbers Inefficient use of resources – large number of learning venues – 25 venues, 12 in Machynlleth town itself Providers operating with little, if any, financial margins – does not promote sustainability or security Doing nothing is not an option for Adults

Slide12:

Latent demand for learning – 74% of learners and 63% of non-learners interviewed said they would like to participate in a course in the future Barriers to learning include time, lack of knowledge of what’s available, travel issues, costs and lack of accessibility Less people in the area have qualifications than generally across Wales Opportunities to develop the education provided

Slide13:

Option 3: Coordinated learning and community support in the Dyfi Valley Integrate all secondary school, adult learning and wider community services under one consortium i.e. all learning from post-11 onwards An element of co-location of services at one venue will be needed, whilst other services will remain at current locations but operate with greater coordination

Slide14:

Option 2: A coordinated post-16 learning and skills centre Close the sixth form at Ysgol Bro Ddyfi Develop a learning and skills centre in the Dyfi Valley to provide all post-16 learning, including A levels, adult learning and business-orientated training Centre would incorporate other facilities such as library and ICT centre

Slide15:

Option 1: A local adult learning centre and out of area sixth form Close the sixth form at Ysgol Bro Ddyfi Facilitate young people to access sixth form provision at neighbouring providers Adult learning to be coordinated in one venue in Machynlleth

Next steps:
