Doing nothing is not an option for young people About 40% of 6th formers go to other schools; Local 6th form class sizes too small to be ‘acceptable learning experience’; YBD sixth form is the most expensive per capita across Wales and receives a significant subsidy; Deliverability of 14 – 19 agenda in area questionable.

Uncoordinated adult community learning leading to wasteful duplication Courses frequently cancelled due to insufficient numbers Inefficient use of resources – large number of learning venues – 25 venues, 12 in Machynlleth town itself Providers operating with little, if any, financial margins – does not promote sustainability or security Doing nothing is not an option for Adults

Latent demand for learning – 74% of learners and 63% of non-learners interviewed said they would like to participate in a course in the future Barriers to learning include time, lack of knowledge of what’s available, travel issues, costs and lack of accessibility Less people in the area have qualifications than generally across Wales Opportunities to develop the education provided

Option 3: Coordinated learning and community support in the Dyfi Valley Integrate all secondary school, adult learning and wider community services under one consortium i.e. all learning from post-11 onwards An element of co-location of services at one venue will be needed, whilst other services will remain at current locations but operate with greater coordination

Option 2: A coordinated post-16 learning and skills centre Close the sixth form at Ysgol Bro Ddyfi Develop a learning and skills centre in the Dyfi Valley to provide all post-16 learning, including A levels, adult learning and business-orientated training Centre would incorporate other facilities such as library and ICT centre
