Japan’s role in the maintenance of international peace and security Japan has taken active and constructive role in the maintenance of international peace and security. Japan now serves its 9th term of the non-permanent membership of the Security Council. Japan is dispatching its Self-Defense Forces to the Indian Ocean to assist the global fight against terrorism and to Iraq to help its reconstruction.

Japan’s contribution to the financing of the United Nations Japan is the second largest contributor to the UN budgets, contributing 19.468% (2004-06) of the total assessed contributions. Japan also voluntarily contributed about US$2.1 billion (2001-03) to the UN, its funds and programs, and specialized agencies, making it the second largest contributor.

Japan’s contribution to the world development Japan provided a total of US$ 8.9 billion of official development assistance (ODA) in 2003, making itself the second largest donor. Japan is actively working for poverty reduction, in such areas as education, health, social welfare, water and sanitation, and agriculture.

Japan’s efforts for Human Security: 

Japan’s efforts for Human Security Japan is promoting the concept of “Human Security,” which aims at protecting and empowering people from critical and pervasive threats to human lives, livelihoods and dignity, and thus to enhancing human fulfillment. Japan established the Trust Fund for Human Security in the UN. By Dec 2004, total contributions amounted to $256 million. Japan, through the Trust Fund and other forms of ODA, supports projects and programs that address diverse threats including poverty, conflicts, refugee/IDP problems, and infectious diseases.
