Most Pavement Distress is a Result of Weathering and Oxidation starts immediately, and is the major cause pavement failure and it occurs throughout the life of the pavement. The majority of damage occurs during the First 2 to 4 years, before the pavement is protected from absorbing moisture. Typically, Sealers are not applied until years later when some form of deterioration is already beginning to show. People tend to want to get some “use out of the pavement” before the think about spending more money to preserve it. This delay in sealing the pavement sets the stage for early failure and a shorter life span for the pavement . Weathering and Oxidation

Weathering and Oxidation Removes the Light Asphalt Particles from the surface of the pavement through evaporation. This causes the top ½ inch of pavement to become more “brittle” than the rest of the pavement. This “brittleness” begins the Premature Cracking and/or Raveling of the surface, setting the stage for several types of pavement failure and distress.

When construction is finished, the typical level of compaction leaves the Asphalt with 5% to 8% air voids Summer heat causes the “lights” to evaporate out of asphalt. “Lights” are the smaller asphalt molecules, similar to the difference between Diesel and Gasoline. This evaporation reduces the strength of the asphalt to hold the aggregate tight, this allows the pavement to begin cracking allowing moisture to penetrate the pavement and over time allows moisture to get into the base, which leads to further failures. Moisture is pavements biggest enemy

Traditional asphalt treatments typically seal over the surface of the pavement, and actually traps the moisture below the surface. Then with extreme hot weather the “Lights” are steamed out of the asphalt like a pressure cooker. Moisture is pavements biggest enemy

Traditional Sealers Provide more “esthetics” than protection. They fail to address the primary cause of pavement failure which is- “Water getting into the pavement structure”, in fact they can actually trap moisture in the pavement causing more damage .

HAWK SEAL-E replaces the “ Light Asphalt Particles” in the top portion of the pavement that have been removed by UV Rays and evaporation with a petroleum based extract. The extract softens the asphalt in the pavement to allow the Co-Polymers to adhere to the asphalt and aggregate in the pavement. HAWK SEAL-E’s Molecular structure is heavier than water and is positively charged to pull the product deep into the pavement, sealing the pavement from the bottom up over several applications. HAWK SEAL-E sets up like a “silicone” that seals the cracks and voids throughout the pavement. HOW DOES “HAWKSEAL” WORK

Hawk Seal products- Are water based and will not harm the environment. Will not injure birds, insects, and animals or humans. Will not damage streams, ponds, or rivers. THE HAWK SEAL-E APPLICATION PROCESS Typically, 3 applications will seal the pavement. Pavement that is poorly constructed and not compacted tightly can take more. Bike trails, parking lots and driveways that have decompressed due to light traffic can also take several applications to fill the voids. Applying Hawk Seal-E is a simple and fairly quick application process requiring minimal down time. It typically cures for traffic in 30 minutes to an hour.

Center line is still visible after 4 applications Hawk Seal-E goes on like a stain; similar to Thompson wood sealer, it is naturally opaque, unless color is added. It will not cover centerlines or parking striping which eliminates the time and expense of remarking. It will not permanently stain cars or other objects. It is non-toxic and washes off with water and a citrus cleaner. Traffic will not affect it prior to complete drying It can be applied at 50 degrees ground temperature and above. It will not make the street surface slipperey.

These are side by side photos of opposite ends of Red Oak St. 16+ years later after being sealed with Hawk Seal-E Hawk Seal-E is still protecting the west end of the street. If needed- re-sealing could add more years of life to the street, applying Hawk Seal E is far more economical than the cost of continuous crack filling, patching, and ultimately the high cost overlay. Hawk Seal-E is one of the best investments in paving today!

At the time this street was sealed, no one knew how long or how well Hawk Seal E would work. It has certainly far exceeded the expectations of our chemist and engineer.

Driveways, Parking Lots and Bike Trails . Ever wonder why asphalt driveways and parking lots seem to deteriorate faster than streets? Without the compaction from heavier traffic driveways, bike trails, and parking lots begin to “decompress” and absorb more moisture. Without routine maintenance they begin to deteriorate quickly and require more and more maintenance as time goes on.

The “Do It Yourself” sealers require pavements to be cleaned and cracks sealed prior to application, and usually need to be re-applied every 2 to 5 years. Topical sealers actually seal the moisture in the pavement, causing the “ Lights” to be steamed out which actually speeds up the deterioration. Hawk Seal-E can eliminate this ongoing expense and work of maintaining your driveway and parking lots!

The Key To Added Pavement Life Keeping water from penetrating the pavement and into the underlying base creating soft spots and pot holes by sealing the pavement is important. Curb and gutter, proper drainage, shoulder maintenance and ditching are very important in keeping the underlying base dry to support the pavement.
