Out of the ten American Impressionist during this century his Impressionist paintings were influenced by the French Impressionist movement. You will begin to see the structure impressionist portrayed in this century as well as, how his paintings where portrayed in this era. My goal is to observe Dewing’s structure as an American Impressionist. Slide 4: Impressionism is the opposite of Romantic ideals with optical Realism, which was a movement in French painting. Impressionism began, in the late eighteenth century and early nineteenth century. This type of painting is created though visual observation. Impressionists would see and create a painting only of realistic actuality. For example they would paint a person as how they looked with out abstract essences, cubism being its opposite. Though direct observation, Impressionist painters worked off the light complex reflected during painting. The Impressionist movement comes from the idea of, conservative criticism. Slide 7: Tomas Wilmer Dewing was an American Artist during 1852-1938. Dewing paintings where infused with color that set the mood to his entire painting. During this era, Dewing paintings did not have universal approval due the delicacy of subtle color harmonies. Slide 12: Dewing Impressionism was though expression towards the vehicle of the female human figure. Which to me gives delicacy to his expression, in a soft form of impressionist painting. He studied painting in France then later moved back to New York in 1880. Slide 15: Thomas Wilmer Dewing's "The Spinet“ 1902 The painting “The Spinet’” is a painting seen by critics as a mess of colors, though is painted in a great brilliance of warmth. Some say the detail is difficult to see, but in my eyes the difficulty gives the painting softness. The “mosaic” of light and dark was the emphases of Dewing’s work. Slide 18: You may notice Dewing paintings have a hazy view described as an atmospheric form as his impressionist composition. His paintings where described as a form of enigmatic paintings of woman. The paintings describe the verity of how the female figure was in that century. Some feminist saw Dewing paintings as misogynistic.
