Slide 1:

An American Thanksgiving Where did Thanksgiving come from? BY: Karen, Shere, & Julie

Slide 2:

A group of people now called the Pilgrims left the Netherlands in September 1620 to find religious freedom. They came to America on the Mayflower.

Slide 3:

When the pilgrims arrived in America, they landed on Plymouth Rock.

Slide 4:

Life was hard for the Pilgrims in America. The conditions were harsh and cold and they did not know how to grow crops or harvest food.

Slide 5:

An Indian name Samoset came to greet the pilgrims, but there was a language barrier and the next day Samoset came back with an English speaking Indian named Squanto.

Slide 6:

Squanto taught the pilgrims how to hunt and grow food. With Squanto’s help, the pilgrims were able to harvest in October.

Slide 7:

To celebrate their success, the pilgrims had a three day feast and invited Squanto and other Indians. This was the first Thanksgiving.

Slide 8:

This celebration after harvest was practiced every year and in 1863 president Abraham Lincoln declared the last Thursday of November as Thanksgiving Day.

Slide 9:

Today, Thanksgiving is associated with family, food and football. It is still a time to be thankful for all that we have.

Slide 10:
