Introduction to Metaphor : 

Association of two objects by saying that one of them is the other Metaphor compares two objects , but does not use “like” or “as” or “than” Metaphor creates strong images for the reader Example Her heart is a sphere of crystalline ice Introduction to Metaphor

Are the following sentences metaphor? He fights like a lion - No, it is NOT metaphor because this uses the word “like” The window outside is a bullet train - Yes, it IS metaphor Introduction to Metaphor (continued)

Demonstrating Metaphor : 

Step I Think about a metaphor that would compare your family to animals. Brainstorm words. Demonstrating Metaphor Father Bear Mother Tiger Sister Bird

Step II Use metaphor to write two or three sentences in introducing family character Father is a bear because he is tall and stoutly built. Mother is a tiger because she has dignity even though she does not talk. My sister is a bird because she always chatters. Demonstrating Metaphor (continued)

Guided Practice : 

Pair up with the person next to you. Think of a metaphor that would compare your best friend to something else in the school. Talk to each other in describing the best friend with metaphor. Write a short story about your best friend with at least five sentences with metaphor. Read loud the story before the class. Guided Practice

Apply it : 

Write a short poem comparing your school life to anything in the world with metaphor. Exchange your poem with your partner. Underline all of metaphors in your partner’s poem. Read loud your poem before the class Apply it
