Participants will have the opportunity to work with a real crime scene investigator, a chemist, a medical doctor and nurses while solving a variety of forensic cases. In addition, participants will receive special test-taking tips, strategies, and resources to help them become even more successful on the LEAP, GEE, and ACT. There will be several recreational activities that will include swimming, basketball, video games, and computer exercises on the campus of the famous Grambling State University. A field trip to the crime laboratory is planned to highlight the forensic activities. Campers will visit state-of-the-art Wellness/Medical Centers in Shreveport, Louisiana and learn how technology has changed the area of health science and sports medicine and to learn about career options. Experience LaTech College life by exercising at the Lambright Wellness Center, playing basketball in Memorial Gym, or just relaxing at the dorm! Imagine where we would be without the bridges that cross waterways, gorges, and other impasses! Now you will have the opportunity to learn the basic principles of bridge construction and build a bridge or two of your own! Working with engineers who have actually been in the bridge-building business, you will also visit historic Vicksburg, Mississippi to see these principles applied to an actual bridge as well as in a civil war-era river boat. Of course, you will enjoy all of the free-time activities available at Louisiana Tech. June 3-9 June 17-23Transportation: Transportation Charter or university bus will pick up students at LA GEAR UP Schools on Sundays You may be asked to meet the bus at some other location within the Parish, but every effort will be made to pick up students at the school they attend Bus schedules will be mailed with confirmation letters or at least one week prior to the start of the camp that your child is attending It is important to be at the pick-up location at least 15 minutes before the scheduled pick up time. Transportation: Transportation Circumstances beyond our control may cause a delay in bus schedules. There is a contact number provided with the bus schedule for you to call to inquire about the bus. Please do not call the number until the bus is 30 minutes late. Drivers are only required to inform us if they are running more than 15 minutes behind schedule, so if you call before the 30 minutes are up, we probably will not have any information for you. Transportation Safety: Transportation Safety The safety of all students is of paramount importance to us. Therefore, all students must follow the bus rules as listed on the following slide. A bus rule form will be included in the camp confirmation packet and must be signed by the student and the parent or guardian of the student. This form should be presented to the bus driver at the time of pick up. No student will be allowed to ride the bus without that form. Please note that the bus driver is the only adult on the bus and has complete responsibility and authority during transportation. Help ensure that everyone has a positive camp experience by discussing appropriate behavior with your child before boarding the bus.Bus Rules: Bus Rules All Students are to remain seated at all times while bus is in motion. No Loud talking or playing of music from personal players. No smoking, chewing, dipping, or sunflower seeds. Place all trash in bags in the front or rear of bus. Report any problems with other passengers to the driver or monitor. All passengers that are disruptive to the driver or other passengers or not following bus rules will be asked to stop their actions. If a problem continues the driver will call 911 or stop at the nearest law enforcement agency. IF POLICE ARE CALLED THE PASSENGER IS SUBJECT TO REMOVAL FROM BUS AND PARENT OR GUARDIAN WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR TRANSPORTING PASSENGER HOME NOT LOUISIANA TECH UNIVERSITY OR ANY OF ITS EMPLOYEES.Meals: Meals Upon arrival to camp, all students will have a dinner provided. Depending on how long your child will be on the bus, you may want to send a sack lunch or snack to eat on the way Every day, campers will three “all-you-can-eat” meals plus snacks throughout the day Communication: Communication A primary emergency contact number for each camp will be provided with the confirmation packet Dorm rooms generally have a phone jack and are assigned a local phone number. Your child may bring a phone to plug into the jack to use while at camp. Remember, no long distance calls can be made on these phones, so send a calling card if you want your child to call home A toll-free number for LaCAMPS will be provided if you are unable to reach your child for any reason Cell Phones: Cell Phones Keep in mind that your child will be busy all day from 8 am to 5 pm and that the use of cell phones during class and organized activities is strictly prohibited. Cell phones may be used before classes start at 8:00, during the morning and afternoon break, during lunch, and any time after 5:00 pm. What should I Bring to Camp?: What should I Bring to Camp? All campers will receive camp shirts to wear Monday-Friday while at camp. In addition to clothes and personal toiletries, campers need to bring: Sheets/blanket for twin size bed, pillow(s) and pillowcase(s). A mattress cover is recommended Alarm clock Umbrella Medicine (if needed) A complete list will be sent with confirmation packet What About Money?: What About Money? Everything that a camper may need will be provided. This includes meals and snacks. However, campers may want to bring a limited amount of cash for incidental expenses and to purchase souvenirs of their camp experience. If cash is brought to camp, please know that we assume no responsibility for safekeeping money. Campers are urged to keep money with them at all times. Never leave personal belongings, including cash, unattended. What About Safety?: What About Safety? The safety of all campers is our primary concern while campers are in our care. Campers are assigned to a camp counselor immediately upon arrival at camp. The counselors work with small groups (usually 5-6) and are responsible for monitoring campers 24 hours per day. Campers are not permitted to be anywhere without a counselor. Counselors stay in the dorm with the campers. In addition, a dorm monitor/security guard is on duty over night to safeguard our campers. What About Safety?: What About Safety? In the event of an injury, campers will be provided with the appropriate medical care at a local hospital. Our camp insurance will cover medical expenses arising from an injury (secondary to any insurance the camper may already have). Family members will be notified immediately. In the event your child becomes sick during camp, we will notify the family to determine how the illness should be handled. If it is determined that immediate medical attention is needed, we will make sure the camper is transported to the emergency room. The family is responsible for medical expenses incurred in treating illness. If we are unable to reach a family member, camp staff will determine the appropriate medical care needed, and the family of the camper will again be responsible for those medical expenses.Can I Choose a Roommate?: Can I Choose a Roommate? Keep in mind that most colleges assign students to dorms at random. Therefore, as a college student, you may have to room with someone that you do not know. This can be an enriching experience as you have the opportunity to meet someone new. However, if you would like to specify a roommate for camp, there is a way to do it. When you arrive at camp, inform your counselor and/or the camp director that you would like to request a roommate. They will make every effort to accommodate your request.How Do I Register?: How Do I Register?
