The God who is a Family The God who is a Family : The God who is a Family The God who is a Family : The God who is a Family The Old Testament was very firm about the fact that there was only one God, but once the Christian Church was formed, it had to work out where Jesus and the Holy Spirit fitted in: If Jesus was God, and the Holy Spirit was God, and God the Father was God. The God who is a Family : The God who is a Family The Trinity is one. There are not three gods, but one God in three persons. These divine persons do not divide out the one divinity among themselves, but each of them is God whole and entire. The divine persons are really different from one another. Father, Son and Holy Spirit are not simply names for different roles played by the same person. The God who is a Family : The God who is a Family The three persons of the Trinity have different origins:-It is the Father who generates, -The Son who is begotten. -And the Holy Spirit who proceeds. The God who is a Family : The God who is a Family Jesus reveals his Father as the one who sends. "When the appointed time came, God sent his Son." (Gal. 4: 4) This revelation reflects the truth that "the Person of the Father is not made by anyone, nor created, nor begotten.” (Athanasian Creed) Jesus reveals himself as the Son who is sent: "I have come here from God... not that I came because I chose, no, I was sent, and by him." (John 8: 42) Slide 7: Jesus reveals the Holy Spirit as one who proceeds from the Father and the Son: "When the Advocate comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who issues from the Father, he will be my witness." This mission reflects the truth that "the Holy Spirit is the uncreated Person who proceeds from the Father and the Son as their eternal love." (Credo of the People of God) - "God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts: the Spirit that cries, 'Abba, Father'." (Gal. 4: 6) Mass & the Trinity : Mass & the Trinity The celebrant makes the sign of the cross, saying "In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit", Amen. "The Lord be with you.""And also with you." Mass & the Trinity, Mary & Saints : Mass & the Trinity, Mary & Saints I confess to Almighty God, and to you my brothers and sisters that I have sinned ...to do; and I ask the Blessed Mary, ever Virgin, all the angels and saints, and you (here present), to pray for me to the Lord our God. Mass & the Trinity : Mass & the Trinity Glory to God in the Highest, ...Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, ...Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, … have mercy on us;you are seated at the right hand of the Father, receive our prayer.… Jesus Christ ,with the Holy Spirit,in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Mass & the Trinity : Mass & the Trinity CREED (All stand) We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,….. All bow deeply at "by the power of the Holy Spirit . . . man." All kneel at these words on the solemnities of Christmas and the Annunciation. Sanctus Holy, Holy, Holy... The God who is a Family : The God who is a Family The divine persons are related to one another. Even though they are separate Persons, this does not deny their real unity. They still share one nature or substance. Eucharistic Prayer: to the Father : Eucharistic Prayer: to the Father He keeps his hands extended for "Father, accept this offering . . ." ("Hanc igitur"). Who? “Come Sanctifier” He joins his hands briefly and holds them outstretched, palms down, over the gifts at the epiklesis, "Bless and approve . . . only Son Our Lord." Eucharistic Prayer: to the Father : Eucharistic Prayer: to the Father “And so, Father, we bring you these gifts. We ask you to make them holy by the power of your Spirit, that they may become the body and blood of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, at whose command we celebrate this Eucharist.” Eucharistic Prayer: to the Father : Eucharistic Prayer: to the Father The 3 Divine Persons act together in the Holy Sacrifice of the altar. Through Jesus Christ your Son, our Lord who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit One God forever and ever. CONSECRATION : CONSECRATION During the epiklesis the voice may well be lowered slightly and the pace of the words could slow down so as to lead the people towards the moment of the Consecration. The bell may be rung, with moderation, just before the celebrant begins the epiklesis. Memorial Prayer : Memorial Prayer “In memory of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Father, this life-giving bread, this saving cup.We thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you.May all of us who share in the body and blood of Christ be brought together in unity by the Holy Spirit.” In Communion With The Saints : In Communion With The Saints (Priest) “May he make us an everlasting gift to you and enable us to share in the inheritance of your saints, with Mary, the virgin Mother of God;with the apostles, the martyrs, (Saint N. — the saint of the day or patron saint) and all your saints, on whose constant intercession we rely for help.” In Communion With Mary, Angels & The Saints : In Communion With Mary, Angels & The Saints The "Mystic Wine" tapestry - Flanders, c. 1500-1522 In Communion With Mary, Angels & The Saints : In Communion With Mary, Angels & The Saints The subject is based upon the grape, symbol of the Passion and of the Eucharist.
