God is infinitely greater than we are, therefore we should not expect to be able to fully understand Him. Justin Martyr "There will be no other God, O Trypho, nor was there from eternity any other existing . . . but he who made and disposed all this universe… the God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob" (Dialogue With Trypho the Jew 11 [A.D. 155]). Revelation of the Mystery : Revelation of the Mystery · Annunciation ( Luke 1:26–38 ) · Baptism of Our Lord (Luke 3:21–22) · Ascension: “Go you therefore ...” (Matthew 28:19) + Promise of the Holy Spirit: “I will ask the Father...” (John 14:16) Slide 3: The First Person -------------------- The Father The Second Person -------------------- The Son The Third Person ------------------------ The Holy Spirit Not three gods Not three spirits Not three beings Rather: One God One Being But mysteriously, God is three distinct persons, in one divine nature. The Holy Trinity ExplainedOne in three? Three in one? : The Holy Trinity ExplainedOne in three? Three in one? The Trinity is a concept that is impossible for any human being to fully understand, let alone explain. The Holy Trinity ExplainedOne in three? Three in one? : The Holy Trinity ExplainedOne in three? Three in one? The Old Testament was very firm about the fact that there was only one God, but once the Christian Church was formed, it had to work out where Jesus and the Holy Spirit fitted in. If Jesus was God, and the Holy Spirit was God, and God the Father was God, did that mean that there were three gods‘? Or if there was only one God, how was it that there seemed to be three separate persons‘? The Holy Trinity Explained : The Holy Trinity Explained "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" (Matthew 28:19) This little conundrum caused all sorts of problems, and a whole batch of heresies. Jesus = God? Jesus = Man? Father, Son & Holy Spirit? different roles played by the same person? Arianism : Arianism Arius – a priest of Alexandria taught that the Son of God is not of one nature or substance with God the Father, nor equal to Him in dignity. He also denied that the Son was co-eternal with the Father. The Council of Nicaea (325) : The Council of Nicaea (325) - This Council was called by Constantine the Great to settle the dispute over the relationship between the First and Second Persons of the Trinity. - It finally condemned the heretical teaching of Arius. - The Council Fathers composed THE CREED. Nestorianism : Nestorianism Nestorius: a priest of Antioch. Later, bishop of Constantinople in 428. He declared that the Blessed Virgin was mother only of Christ’s human nature and he banned the term “Mother of God”. He also taught that only Christ as man (not as God) died on the cross. Nestorianism : Nestorianism If Jesus died on a cross, and if he is the Person of the Son, then Christ as God (Person of the Son) died on a cross. We can truly say the God suffered (in his humanity). The Council of Ephesus (431) : The Council of Ephesus (431) It condemned both Nestorianism and Pelagianism. It defined the Catholic dogma that the Blessed Virgin Mary is the Mother of God. It defined the hypostatic union of the two natures, divine and human, in the one divine Person of Christ. Slide 13: Monophysitism Mono: one Physis: nature The Monophysites affirmed that the human nature of Christ had ceased to exist as such in Christ when the divine person of God’s Son assumed it. Monophysitism teaches that there was only one nature in Christ, and that Christ was not both God and Man. The Council of Chalcedon (451) : The Council of Chalcedon (451) This Council condemned Monophysitism: Following the holy Fathers, we unanimously teach and confess one and the same Son, our Lord Jesus Christ: the same perfect in divinity and perfect in humanity, the same truly God and truly man, composed of rational soul and body; consubstantial with the Father as to his divinity and consubstantial with us as to his humanity; “like us in all things but sin.” He was begotten from the Father before all ages as to his divinity and in these last days, for us and for our salvation, was born as to his humanity of the virgin Mary, the Mother of God. We confess that one and the same Christ, Lord, and only-begotten Son, is to be acknowledged in two natures without confusion, … The Holy Trinity Explained : The Holy Trinity Explained The Trinity is one. There are not three gods, but one God in three persons. These divine persons do not divide out the one divinity among themselves, but each of them is God whole and entire. Slide 16: - Father, Son and Holy Spirit are not simply names for different roles played by the same person. - The three persons of the Trinity have different origins: It is the Father who generates, The Son who is begotten, And the Holy Spirit who proceeds. - Related to one another. - Separate persons, - Real unity. They still share one nature or substance: GOD The divine persons are really different from one another Slide 17: Each member of the Trinity is God The Holy Spirit is subordinate to the Father and the Son, and the Son is subordinate to the Father. What is The Relationship Between The Father, The Son And The Holy Spirit? : What is The Relationship Between The Father, The Son And The Holy Spirit? Jesus reveals his Father as the one who sends. "When the appointed time came, God sent his Son." (Gal. 4: 4) ”The Person of the Father is not made by anyone, nor created, nor begotten." (Athanasian Creed) WHO CREATES? : WHO CREATES? Traditionally, the work of creation is appropriated to the Father. But The Three Persons create. WHO SENDS THE SON? : WHO SENDS THE SON? Jesus reveals himself as the Son who is sent: "I have come here from God... not that I came because I chose, no, I was sent, and by him." (John 8: 42) This mission reflects the truth that "the Person of the Son is from the Father alone, not made, not created, but begotten." (Athanasian Creed) The Son alone became man. WHO SAVED US? : WHO SAVED US? Jesus = God saves. WHO SENDS THE HOLY SPIRIT? : WHO SENDS THE HOLY SPIRIT? Jesus reveals the Holy Spirit as one who proceeds from the Father and the Son: "When the Advocate comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who issues from the Father, he will be my witness." (Credo of the People of God) The Holy Spirit completes the work of creation and salvation: "God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts: the Spirit that cries, 'Abba, Father'." (Gal. 4: 6) WHO SENDS THE HOLY SPIRIT? : WHO SENDS THE HOLY SPIRIT? The Holy Spirit is the means by whom the Father does the following works: 1) creation and maintenance of the universe (Genesis 1:2; Job 26:13; Psalm 104:30); 2) divine revelation (John 16:12-15; Ephesians 3:5; 2 Peter 1:21); 3) salvation (John 3:6; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:2); and 4) Jesus' works (Isaiah 61:1; Acts 10:38). Thus the Father does all these things by the power of the Holy Spirit. Are The Three Persons of The Holy Trinity One God? : Are The Three Persons of The Holy Trinity One God? The three Persons :"in substance ... co-eternal and co-equal with one another." When Jesus was baptised: "Heaven opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily shape, like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, 'You are my Son, the Beloved'." (Luke 3: 22) The mystery of the Trinity is beyond our understanding. : The mystery of the Trinity is beyond our understanding. Over the centuries the Church has upheld true doctrine against errors which denied either that the three Persons are really distinct or exaggerated that distinction. ‘Unity in the Trinity and Trinity in the unity must be humbly acknowledged'. The Trinity is a community of Persons, eternally bound together in perfect understanding and love. The mystery of the Trinity is beyond our understanding. : The mystery of the Trinity is beyond our understanding. NATURE IS ONE: LOVE In the Blessed Trinity everything is ONE. ACTION IS ONE: Every action Ad Extra is common to the 3. Mission: Son sent by… the FATHER. Mission: Holy Spirit sent by... …THE FATHER & THE SON. MYSTERY OF FAITH : MYSTERY OF FAITH We refer to the doctrine of the Holy Trinity as a "mystery". The "mystery" of the Trinity is not primarily to do with how the one God exists in three persons. The "mystery" of the Trinity is primarily about relationships the perfect relationship between the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
