On 12/26/97, Bill and I found Faux Pas in the Broward County, Florida Animal Control facility. He had been adopted, had his surgery and was returned to the facility when the incision became infected and the people didn't want a "sick" puppy. He was 18 months old, weighed about 6 lbs and we were told he was a Yorkie mix. He was raging with fever so we took him to our vet (who had taken care of Mr. and Mrs. Friedlanders ' (DDTCA members) Dandies for many years. Both our vet and groomer were sure Faux Pas was part Dandie - he had many of their characteristics except size. He eventually grew to 13 lbs and brought us into the Dandie world. Until he passed away in 2010, he was all Dandie in attitude and ruled the house. He helped train Coco, Amy and Gregor . His loyal buddy, Doodle Bug, accompanied him. Those of us who rescue Dandies came to know Phil Morgan as a unique man of great strength and courage and love for Dandies through numerous phone conversations and emails. He was a paraplegic from an accident in his young manhood and never let it stop him. Living in a small town north of San Francisco, he found freedom and many friends via his motorcycle with the side car occupied by his present Dandie . First there was Mr. Bean whom Phil found tied up and basically abandoned in his small town neighborhood. Phil just took over and Mr. Bean became a devoted companion, loving the rides in the side car. If Phil left him there as he went into a store, Phil returned to find lovely girls adoring the bean. Thus began the name “chick magnet,” often described by him on the phone accompanied by delighted giggles. Upon Mr. Bean’s passing, Phil was truly destitute to the point of extreme desperation. In a conversation with Doug and Julie Young, they without hesitation offered Montizard’s Huff ‘n Puff who was himself in need of a forever home. The Puff inherited the role of chick magnet and gradually learned to tolerate and then enjoy the rides in the side car through the beauty of northern California. While not the total buddy Mr. Bean had been, Puff earned his own spot in Phil’s heart. When the Dandie Dinmont Terrier Rescue League contacted Phil about helping to identify a possible Dandie in a San Francisco shelter, he scurried to meet the need. His van in need of wipers to be legal and the weather being wet prompted a major scurry to “get legal” and come to the rescue. Ever the eager Dandie Man, Phil arrived at the shelter where he met Stephanie White, another Dandie lover in the bay area who also answered the call. Their friendship began over the little Dandie “wannabe” fondly named the Doodle Bug. As time went by the Bug and the Puff worked out their positions. Phil thought the Bug was possibly a Puli-Dandie mix as his improving coat came in the form of ropes of that breed. But the personality was one of a loyal and loving Dandie . Doodle Bug was his backup as he knew Puff would soon be leaving. As time and events have revealed Phil’s life to us in the DDTRL, it is obvious he had a profound effect on all who knew him. He was brave and funny, devoted and very intelligent. Often he was called upon to make distinctive improvements in wheel chairs. He also had a room full of amplifiers and other electronic paraphernalia of a musician. Phil died after a long battle to live with the devastating effects of the latest developments (mini strokes, etc.) from his nearly life-long paraplegic condition. He lived with great courage to maintain his body, his spirit and love of life and his Dandies. He was a lovely gentle man of the first order and we shall miss him mightily .Carlie Kalmbach : Carlie Kalmbach I was born in the summer of my 4 th year of life, when I was rescued from a puppy mill. At first all appeared to be well with her, but shortly after she went to her forever home it became apparent that this was not so. A visit to the Vet revealed that she was suffering from kidney damage (not kidney disease) and was functioning on just one kidney. Immediately her new people and DDTRL took steps to alleviate the situation. At first with medication and a special kidney diet she did well. Sadly in April 2011 she again showed signs of distress and was found once again to be in renal (kidney) failure. This time she could not be saved and much to the distress of her people, her companion dog and members of DDTRL she went to the Rainbow Bridge on 24 th April, 2011. She was just 4 years old. Had she received medical treatment at the time the damage occurred she could have lived a normal lifespan but, of course, Puppy Millers just do not give medical treatment to their unfortunate animals. Piper will long be remembered for her loving personality, her little squeaky bark and the valiant fight she waged to live. Be at peace little girl… Piper was a delightful Dandie girl, full of love and joy. It was a wonderful experience watching her bloom from an insecure puppy mill rescue to a beloved member of our family. Her time with us was short but her memory will last a life time. : Piper was a delightful Dandie girl, full of love and joy.
