Brief History……: 

Brief History…… 1971: The Shoreline Management Act (SMA) was passed by the Legislature. Response to a voter initiative Established balance of authority between local and state. Gave primary regulatory authority to the Cities & County.

1975:: 

Chelan County adopted our current Shoreline Master Program. Was prepared by a group of citizens as part of an appointed Advisory Committee. The document took over nine months to prepare. 1975:

2003:: 

Ecology updated the SMP Guidelines Set New Compliance Deadlines Chelan County’s deadline: 2013. Provided funding for updates through Grant agreements 2003:

SMP Update Process: 

SMP Update Process Cooperative program between Local & State Government Chelan County opted to be an early adopter Scheduled to be complete June 30, 2010

Chelan County’s Role:: 

Chelan County’s Role: Project Management & Coordination Encourage public participation through hosting informational meetings and workshops. Develop the SMP with the assistance of Advisory Committee, Cities & Consultant Administer the SMP Rules & Regulations

Ecology’s Role:: 

Ecology’s Role: Provide funding and grant support. Participate as member of Advisory Committee Ensure consistency with the Washington Administrative Code (WAC).
