What is WiMAX?:

What is WiMAX ? A fourth generation ( 4G ) technology. WiMAX stands for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access. WiMAX is technically also known as “IEEE 802.16” WiMAX is a wireless communications standard designed for creating Metropolitan Area Networks(MANs). A Broadband Wireless Access(BWA) technique offering fast broadband connection. It allows a user, to browse the internet on a laptop without physically connecting it to a router. It involves microwaves for the transfer of data wirelessly . Founded by Ensemble, CrossSpan , Harris & Nokia

WiMAX SPECIFICATION:

WiMAX SPECIFICATION 802.16a -Uses the licensed frequencies from 2 to 11 GHz -Supports Mesh network 802.16b -Increase spectrum to 5 and 6 GHz -Provides QoS ( for real time voice and video service) 802.16c -Represents a 10 to 66GHz 802.16e - Addresses on Mobile - Enable high-speed signal handoffs necessary for communications with users moving at vehicular speeds

Architecture:

Architecture IEEE 802.16 Protocol Architecture has 4 layers: Convergence, MAC, Transmission and physical, which can be mapped to two OSI lowest layers: physical and data link

A WiMAX system consists of A WiMAX tower , similar in concept to a cell-phone tower - A single WiMAX tower can provide coverage to a very large area as big as 3,000 square miles (~8,000 square km). A WiMAX receiver - The receiver and antenna could be a small box or Personal Computer Memory card, or they could be built into a laptop the way WiFi access is today

How It Works?:

How It Works? A WiMAX tower station can connect directly to the internet using a high-bandwidth, wired connection. It can also connect to another WiMAX tower using a line-of-sight, microwave link. This connection to a second tower, along with the ability of a single tower to cover up to 3,000 square miles, is what allows WiMAX to provide coverage to remote rural areas.

Connectivity:

Connectivity Devices that provide connectivity to a WiMAX network are known as the “ subscriber stations” . Some of the portable units are: Mobile Phones PC peripherals Laptops Gaming consoles MP3 Players

The WiMAX Forum The WiMAX Forum is a non profit organization formed to promote the adoption of WiMAX compatible products and services. A major role for the organization is to certify the interoperability of WiMAX products. Another role of the WiMAX Forum is to promote the spread of knowledge about WiMAX .

Applications:

Applications According to WiMAX forum, it supports five classes of applications: Multi-player Interactive Gaming. VOIP and Video Conference Streaming Media Web Browsing and Instant Messaging Media Content Downloads

USES OF WiMAX:

USES OF WiMAX Connecting Wi-Fi hotspots to the Internet. Providing a wireless alternative to cable and DSL for "last mile" broadband access. Providing data and telecommunications services. Providing a source of Internet connectivity as part of a business continuity plan. Providing portable connectivity. Providing hassle free ,reliable & hi-speed broadband access.

Disadvantages of WiMAX:

Disadvantages of WiMAX Expensive network Depends on weather condition Power consuming Data rate is slow as compared to fiber optics, satellite and cables Mobility suffers when large sized long range antenna are used. Efficiency can be hampered by conditions and increase of connected user if signal strength is not boosted. Allocation of bandwidth issues.

WiMAX Vs Wi-Fi:

WiMAX Vs Wi-Fi WiMAX coverage is about 30 miles. It provides metropolitan area network(MAN). WiMAX network provides Quality of Service( QoS ). It is a high cost network. It offers high speed of broadband access Wifi coverage is limited to 1.5 miles It provides Local area network. Wifi needs effort to stay connected with a specified access point. It is a low cost network. It offers short range of data transfer.

Advantages of WiMAX over 3G:

Advantages of WiMAX over 3G WiMAX is important for mobile broadband wireless, as it completes 3G by providing higher performance for data with more than 1 Mbps downstream to allow connection of laptops and PDAs. WiMAX has a clear advantage over 3G as it uses OFDM technique. WiMAX spectrum is more economical than 3G.

Present research work on WiMAX:

Present research work on WiMAX WiMAX2 is the present ongoing development in the WiMAX versions. That is to increase the speed of existing WiMAX network. Currently existing WiMAX versions provides minimum of 30 to 40 megabits per second of speed. But the goal of the WiMAX2 is to get 100 Mbit /s for mobile devices and 1 Giga bits per second fixed type of WiMAX devices and 4G for next generation mobile network.
