Introduction:

Our Table (in a Nutshell): International news from local newspapers through a physical world map interface. Using a puck-shaped object, users select any country in the world and a representative online news source (in English) is displayed on a lightbox in front of them. Our Point of View: Most people only read news from their country's news services about domestic issues or the few "hotspot" areas of the world. Our Table increases its users’ awareness of global current events from an international perspecitve. Introduction

User Studies:

groups of 3 completing news-finding tasks using laptop and the map-news table. User Studies

User Study:

Compared how groups completed news-finding tasks on map-table vs. the laptop Forms of Data: Photos, Observations, Browser Histories, User Surveys User Study

User Study:

Encourages Group Participation and Unity more so than a laptop People felt they had more control over the information they found on the Map Table vs. the laptop, but they also wanted more control. Map Table was able to give the user more control, but laptops are limited? Using the laptop is a "hit or miss" way of navigation. If you find something then it can be exactly what you want because you searched for it but you are also more likely to find nothing or irrevalant information. The Map Table you always find something because it always give you back a news website but it can't always be exactly what you are looking for because it returns sites that aren't specefic to anything except country. User Study

User Study: Comments:

Wanted choice of news sites for selected country Better method of navigation for news sites, vertical display Needed help selecting small countries Regional News as well as news by country User Study: Comments

The Future of the World!:

Java application instead of HTML Varying Databases depending on context of table Other applications linking physical objects/interfaces with virtual content software that allows the creation of these kinds of tables to be quicker and easier More natural navigation of Vertical Display Other developments unforeseen until users begin to interact with the table The Future of the World!
