Idea originated in the world of architecture Universal Design is a design approach that seeks to create environments, objects, and systems that can be used by as many people as possible. To this end, Universal Design is the process of embedding choice for all people in the things we design. http://www.universaldesign.comExamples in Physical Environment: Examples in Physical Environment3 Principles of UDL: 3 Principles of UDL Presentation-How material is presented to the students. Expression-How the students demonstrates what he or she has learned. Engagement-What is being done to assist this student in engaging, maintaining, and sustaining in the material.Ideas for presentation: Ideas for presentation “Learners differ in the ways that they perceive and comprehend information that is presented to them” (Cast, 2011) Changing size of text Change color of text Changing volume or rate of speechIdeas for Expression: Ideas for Expression Providing ways for learners to interact with materials Keyboard, Voice Command, Adapted Keyboard Providing ways for learner to express knowledge Essay, Song, Skit, Multi-Media PresentationIdeas for Engagement: Ideas for Engagement Vary the Assignments, Group work, and peer collaboration. Give the students ownership by allowing choices through a comfortable learning environment.Brain Research Surrounding UDL: Recognition- Back of Brain (sensory organs-eyes, ears, smell) designed to process and recognize what something is. Strategic- Front of Brain (Axons leave to muscles) dance, shoot baskets. Gives you actions and plans for actions. Affective- Middle of brain. Evaluate patterns and what is most important action to take. We know the diverse needs of our students and we strive to give them opportunities to achieve in whatever manner necessary.
