Teaching Tools as a Resource: Understanding the Curriculum Mapping Process…:

Teaching Tools as a Resource: Understanding the Curriculum Mapping Process… Curriculum maps… are being developed by many districts across the state as a tool to help organize the curriculum that should be taught within a given timeframe. offer a sequence for delivering content and provide a clear scope for what must be taught to all students, based on Kentucky’s curriculum documents.

Curriculum Maps Help Teachers…:

Curriculum Maps Help Teachers… Focus on the Standards. Make sense of students’ experiences over time. Prevent gaps and overlaps in instruction. Organize curriculum to develop SBUS.

Curriculum Map Screening Tool Directions: Individually, use the screening tool to identify curriculum maps appropriate for further review by your grade-level group (pre-school/primary, intermediate, middle, or high school).:

Devise a plan that you could use with this school that includes questions you may ask during your conversations with the administrators and teachers in the building (use the Norms of Collaboration tool). Record your plan on chart paper and place on the wall for a gallery walk. Using the curriculum document your team is given:

Teaching Tools as a Resource: Developing Standards-based Units of Study:

Teaching Tools as a Resource: Developing Standards-based Units of Study Why should HSEs encourage teachers to develop and use SBUS?

SBUS::

Ensure instruction is focused on Kentucky’s standards (Goals, Academic Expectations, Program of Studies, Core Content). Create a meaningful-to-students unity in learning (organizer, essential questions). Form an organized plan to guide instruction and assessment. Allow for a variety of experiences in reading and writing across the curriculum and grade levels. Identify appropriate learning resources, including technology.    Prepare students for Kentucky’s assessment. SBUS:

Standards-based Units … Emphasize students’ thinking, application of learning, and connection of learning to real life.:

Step 1. Select CONTENT STANDARDS to Target and Assess in the SBUS… :

Step 1. Select CONTENT STANDARDS to Target and Assess in the SBUS… Choose content standards (refer to curriculum map and COMBINED CURRICULUM DOCUMENTS) recommended for the level being taught. Select a manageable number of content standards that will be targeted and assessed. Develop a plan to ensure that all content standards are taught by the suggested time.

Step 4. Planning Assessment: A Project/Performance/Product:

Step 4. Planning Assessment: A Project/Performance/Product

Assessment …:

Assessment … … a task (or set of tasks) that allows students to demonstrate learning of the content and process skills of the unit.

Assessment…:

Assessment… Addresses the essential questions. Allows learners to demonstrate their knowledge of targeted content standards. Includes, but not limited to a project, performance, or product. Includes a scoring guide to inform learners of expectations Offers choice to meet learners differentiated needs. Directs the development of instructional strategies and activities

Examples of Product and/or Performance:

Examples of Product and/or Performance Dramatic presentation Diorama Multimedia Presentations Photo/picture journal or essay Narrated dance routine Reader’s Theatre Web page Real world writing piece

Scoring Guides::

Scoring Guides: Explain to students (and parents) what is expected of them on the task and be given to them at the time of the assignment. Define what different levels of performances will look like. Enable scorers to be fair, consistent, unbiased, and accurate in evaluating the task. Place a value on different performance levels.

Assessment Activities should include …:

Assessment Activities should include … Formal and informal ongoing assessment of student progress. Assessments that mirror state assessment formats (multiple choice questions, open-response questions, performance tasks, and portfolio entries).

Informal and Formal Assessments:

Informal and Formal Assessments Informal Assessments Observation (“kid-watching”) Questioning Learning log Reviewing student work Interview/ conference with learner Formal Assessments Test Quiz Written exam Oral exam Performance assessment task Project Portfolio

Step 5. Planning Instruction:

Step 5. Planning Instruction

Instructional Activities should include::

Instructional Activities should include: Activities should address each essential question Activities to address a variety of learning styles, multiple intelligences, cultural responsiveness Meaningful practice for students to acquire knowledge and processes/skills necessary to successfully complete the project/performance/product. Use of technology Writing as a tool for learning.

Positive Behavioral Supports:

Positive Behavioral Supports Positive reinforcement increases appropriate behaviors. Punishment may inadvertently promote inappropriate behaviors.

Questions for Developing Positive Behavioral Supports:

Questions for Developing Positive Behavioral Supports What behaviors (new and previously taught) will students need to be successful in this unit/lesson? What are the steps to support the behavior? What is the rationale to support the behavior? How are you going to include positive behavior supports within the unit?

Annotating a Unit of Study:

Annotating a Unit of Study You will receive one of the nutrition units (primary, intermediate, middle, or high) to read. Use the SBUS Attribute Screening Tool to work in pairs or threes to analyze the unit. Take note of what the unit addresses well and note where improvement is needed. Share with others at your table, then choose 2 strengths and 2 needs to share with the whole group.
