Slide 3:
John and Mary both work in a restaurant. John works behind the bar and Mary is a waitress. At the end of the evening they decide to split the tips of £60 in the ratio 8 : 7. How much do they each receive? Example 1
Solving the problem:
Solving the problem First thing we do is add the ratios together 8 + 7 = 15 This tells us there are 15 parts Divide the amount by the number of parts £60 -:- 15 = 4 One part is £4. So 8 parts is 8 x £4= £32 and 7 parts is 7 x £4= £28
John gets £32 and Mary gets £28. That is £60 in total:
John gets £32 and Mary gets £28. That is £60 in total

Example 2 James wants to make a vodka martini. The mixer will hold 1l. The recipe for martini’s is 2 measures of vodka 1 measure of vermouth How much vodka does he need? Add the ratios together 2+1 = 3 1l is difficult to use so change to ml. 1l = 1000ml Divide the quantity by the number of parts 1000 -:- 3 = 333.3ml Vodka is 2 parts. So he needs 2 x 333.3ml = 666.6ml That’s shaken not stirred
