WELCOME to theHIJAB WORKSHOP! : WELCOME to theHIJAB WORKSHOP! Presented by: islam4girls@gmail.com ANGELINA JOLIE VISITS PAKISTAN AFTER THE DEVESTATING EARTHQUAKE I N OCTOBER 2005. INTRO : INTRO The Veil by DawudWharnsby Ali http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZepBzULqAg Hijab in Europe: Short Spanish Film (8 mins) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1pJM6PatinI Slide 4: Islam: A Way of Life There are an estimated 1.2 billion Muslims worldwide. 6.7 mill in the US What is Islam? "Islam" means peace and submission. It’s a way of life. It’s a moral attitude. Who is Allah? Allah is the Arabic word for “God.” Allah is God for all human beings Who is Muhammad? Final messenger of God, following Jesus, Moses…and all the others. Holy Text? Qur’aan. Hadith. Inc: (Bible, Psalms, and Torah) Slide 5: Hijab is an Arabic word meaning barrier or partition, it means to hide or to conceal. Note: A Muslim woman may wear whatever she pleases in the presence of her husband and family or among women friends. But when she goes out or when men other than her husband or close family are present she is expected to wear a dress which will cover [her hair and] all parts of her body , and not reveal her figure. Slide 6: TURNING POINT QUESTION: Muslim Women Wear the Headscarf (Hijab) Because: Of a bad hair day Their families make them They wish to dress modestly They are bald Slide 7: "O Prophet, tell your wives and daughters and the believing women to draw their outer garments around them (when they go out or are among men). That is better in order that they may be known (to be Muslims) and not annoyed..." (Qur'an 33:59) Why do Muslim women have to cover their heads? Very simple - Muslim women observe HIJAB (covering the head and the body) because God has told them to do so. Support from the Qur’aan : Support from the Qur’aan “O you Children of Adam! We have bestowed on you raiment to cover your shame as well as to be an adornment to you. But the raiment of righteousness, that is the best. Such are among the Signs of Allah, that they may receive admonition.” (Quran 7:26) “And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what must ordinarily appear therof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands’ fathers, their sons, their husbands’ sons, their brothers, or their brothers’ sons or their sisters’ sons, or their women or the servants whom their right hands possess, or male servants free of physical needs, or small children who have no sense of the shame of sex, and that they should not strike their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments. And O you Believers, turn you all together towards Allah, that you may attain Bliss.” (Quran 24:31). “O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks close round them (when they go abroad). That will be better, so that they may be recognised and not annoyed. Allah is ever Forgiving, Merciful.” (Quran 33:59) Slide 9: Other secondary reasons include: The requirement for modesty in both men and women. Both will then be evaluated for intelligence and skills instead of looks and sexuality. “The beauty of a women must be seen in her Hijab, and her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where it resides.” Slide 10: A Muslim woman who covers her head is making a statement about her identity. Anyone who sees her will know that she is a Muslim and has a good moral character. Head covering is a sign of purity and dignity. Other secondary reasons include: A Hijabi is looking for peace and freedom of mind. She wants to be treated as a human being and respected because of who she is and not how she looks like. Slide 11: As a chaste, modest, pure woman, she does not want her sexuality to enter into interactions with men in the smallest degree. A woman who covers herself is concealing her sexuality but allowing her femininity to be brought out. Other secondary reasons include: “Judge me by what is IN my head, not what is ON my head.” Slide 12: The Hijab is a “screen” between the chaste Muslim woman and the evil that exists in the world. When a woman wears a hijab she is less likely to be harassed by men with lusty motives. She is less likely to be exploited for her beauty and femininity. Other secondary reasons include: “Our bodies will die and pass, but hearts are what matters.. Show the world you care about heart, not beauty of body..” Slide 13: The hijab cuts down on competition among women. People around her are forced to assess her for her mind, and not just superficial physical traits. Other secondary reasons include: How many people around us sacrifice financial savings and health in a desperate attempt to meet up to an unrealistic standard of beauty. Slide 14: Dressing Modestly: Clothing and Dress Hijab doesn’t only mean covering your head!! Since the whole point of the Hijab is to conceal sexuality, other requirements are necessary.. AVOID Slide 15: One important additional requirement is looseness. The clothing must be loose enough so as not to describe the shape of the woman's body. Slide 16: If it is see-through, it is not hijab Thickness is another requirement. The clothing must be thick enough so as not to show the color of the skin it covers. Slide 17: The Hijab shouldn’t attract attention to the women’s beauty. The clothing should be modest, not excessively fancy and also not excessively ragged to gain others admiration or sympathy. BURKINI-The Islamic Swimsuit Avoid! Slide 18: Hijab is even in the way you walk. Remember, you are not a runway model displaying the latest fashion. Walk with modesty and you will be respected. Slide 19: A Symbol of Liberation, Not Oppression “I myself choose to dress in islamic clothing and a headscarf. Some say that it makes me a “radical.” It does not! Radicalism is an attitude, NOT a form of dress. I dress the way I feel comfortable.” Hijab is not oppression to us, as majority of us do choose to wear it. Slide 20: It is interesting to state the head covering for women is not an Islamic innovation but was also practiced by Judeo-Christian women centuries earlier, and yet is looked down upon by the West today. Slide 21: Have you ever wondered why Catholic nuns dress like they're wearing hijab? Muslim hijabi women, have you ever been mistaken for a nun? I have, more than once. Slide 22: Have you ever wondered why Mary the mother of Jesus (peace be upon them both) is always depicted in Christian art with her hair covered? Did you know that until the 1960s, it was obligatory for Catholic women to cover their heads in church (then they "modernized" the service)? Slide 23: Slide 23 BIBLE: First Epistle to the Corinthians, chapter 11, verses 3-10 “But I would have you know that the head of every man is Christ and the head of the woman is the man, and the head of Christ is God. Every man praying or prophesying with his head covered, disgraces his head. But every woman praying or prophesying with her head uncovered disgraces her head, for it is the same as if she were shaven. For if a woman is not covered, let her be shaven. But if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, let her cover her head. A man indeed ought not to cover his head, because he is the image and glory of God….” Modesty for Women in Christianity : Modesty for Women in Christianity However, there are some denominations in Christianity that set their own standards for dress and appearance; Mennonites and Amish being examples. But these are standards set by certain denominations that are not required for Christian salvation. So with that in mind, these verses from Galatians summarize that way of life: As for modesty in public prayer and worship, these verses from 1 Titus give us some guidance: 1Titus 2:8-10 I will therefore that men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting. In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with braided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array. But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works. ~Dr. Nine, RCF, Ross University Modesty for Women in Judaism : Modesty for Women in Judaism Principle of Tzniut (modesty for women and Men) Post Marriage—Not show hair Common—shave head post marriage and wear a wig http://www.lightofmashiach.org/women/headcovering.html Jewish Women praying at the Western Wall in Jerusalem Hijab—A Non Muslim Woman Experiments : Hijab—A Non Muslim Woman Experiments http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXLp2DFO-CU Slide 27: For both men and women, clothing requirements are not meant to be a restriction but rather a way in which society will function in a proper, Islamic manner. The beauty of a woman: is not in a facial mole, but true beauty in a woman, is reflected in her soul. A woman modestly dressed is as a pearl in its shell Hijab is not merely a covering dress but more importantly, it is behavior, manners, speech and appearance in public. Dress is only one facet of the total being. Sexual Harassment in the Workplace : Sexual Harassment in the Workplace •Approximately 15,000 sexual harassment cases are brought to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) each year. •A telephone poll conducted by Louis Harris and Associates on 782 workers revealed: 31% of the female workers claimed to have been harassed at work •· 62% of targets took no action 100% of women claimed the harasser was a man Of the women who had been harassed: 43% were harassed by a supervisor 27% were harassed by an employee senior to them 19% were harassed by a coworker at their level 8% were harassed by a junior employee Studies suggest anywhere between 40-70% of women and 10-20% of men have experienced sexual harassment in the workplace. •A 1999 survey by the Society for Human Resource Management states that 62% of companies offer sexual harassment prevention training programs, and 97% have a written sexual harassment policy.
