Slide 1:What is the purpose of marriage?
Slide 2:P = Procreation (having children) Christians and Muslims agree that marriage is the basis for family life.
They believe that people should only have children when they are married, as children need a stable, loving environment with a mother and father.
Slide 3:U = Union Christian couples are joined and made one by the wedding service. This is reflected in the VOWS and exchange of RINGS.
Catholics believe that marriage is a SACRAMENT which means that through marriage, they are also brought into union with God. Marriage in Islam is a contract between a man and wife, so it is a SOCIAL and LEGAL agreement.
An important part of the ceremony is when the couple sign the NIKKAH, which is an agreement between the couple to support one another and fulfil their responsibilities to each other.
Slide 4:R = Religious duty Although a Muslim wedding is not a religious event, marriage is seen as an important part of living a Muslim life, and being an adult Muslim.
Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was married and so all Muslims are expected to follow this example.
Slide 5:P = Pattern for society Muslims and Christians agree the family life provides the basic building blocks for society. Through family life we learn to be citizens and members of the community.
Slide 6:O = Christians and Muslims would agree that marriage is a life-long, FAITHFUL commitment. This is symbolised by the ring (a circle has no end). Husbands and wives should support one another, share love and companionship throughout life.
Both Muslims and Christians agree that marriage is a two-way relationship with giving and sharing on both sides. Many Christians and some Muslims exchange rings at the wedding to symbolise this two-way commitment.
Slide 7:S = Sex A marriage is a sexual relationship between a couple.
Both Christians and Muslims would say that marriage is the appropriate context in which to enjoy a loving sexual relationship. Marriage is about trust, companionship and enjoyment of one another’s company.
Slide 8:E = everlasting Catholic Christians believe that the union of a man and woman in marriage can only be undone by God, and is therefore never-ending. This is why DIVORCE is a SIN in Catholicism.
