A little bit of history (1):

A little bit of history (1) 1997: TeleTOP is developed in Department of Educational Technology (Prof. dr. Betty Collis) 2000: start of large-scale implementation of TeleTOP in all departments 1999-2004: newer versions, richer functionality of TeleTOP 2003: first student portal (developed by students!) 2003: forming of Teletop BV (seperate commercial entity for marketing andamp; sales of TeleTOP)

A little bit of history (2):

A little bit of history (2) 2004: lots of activities open standards (IMS) are emerging, as well as the SCORM; we deliver a discussion paper we move more and more to J2EE for webapps students complaints grow and grow (lack of integration, information is out-of-date, inreliable and sometimes not findable) UT Policy = Campus Blend: all programmes will have f2f and online components (in different mixes)

A little bit of history (3):

A little bit of history (3) 2005: advisory committee that reports directly to Executive Board What to do with current VLE / CMS? Projectteam investigates Which changes in education do we expect in near future (4-6 y) ? Which (tech) trends are here to stay ? How does this translate to our VLE ?

Changes in education:

Changes in education

Tech trends:

Tech trends Open standards IMS: Learning Design, Content Packaging But also: RSS, CalDAV, JSR168 etc Components, SOA Open source (confusing trend) Web 2.0 (tagging, social software, flickr, friendster, Hyves etc)

What are our current issues in ICT?:

What are our current issues in ICT? Features like Personal profile Course catalogue Throughput to PDA, cellphone etc Notifications (all types) Virtual projectspace (that is very easy to start and use) Current websites andamp; portal Lack of integration, insufficient interoperability Missing, inaccurate, inreliable information

Translated to VLE, it boils down to:

Translated to VLE, it boils down to Student-driven Integration, but not all-in-one Standards-compliant Robust architecture Strong features for collaboration, groupwork

Possible answer:

Possible answer Sakai:::Why? For and by education (community) Architecture Features (more to come hopefully) So: let’s do some pilots (has to be decided on by executive board still) But not Blackboard or Moodle All-in-one Architecture is aging (scalability)

What do you think?:

What do you think? Come to our Birds of a Feather session on Thursday during lunchtime (RM 404): Especially fellow 'non-Americans' We want more info on Technical migration Change management (this is really a very BIG change) Costs and benefits: will they buy it? What are the key selling points (e.g. interoperability)? How to organize this
