Civil War just ended America becoming more urban, less rural Eastern US population booming West is still “wild” California, Oregon, Nevada, and Kansas, Nebraska were only states; rest were territories or unorganized Indians fighting to defend their homes, US Army trying to subdue

Slide 3: 

Most goods produced in small shops by craftsmen No large corporations yet Slow-paced life Based on seasons and sun-time, not clocks No mandatory school laws Few true professions No medical licenses issued No bar association to test attorneys Most Americans lived on family farm or in small agricultural towns

No illegal drugs (!) No antibiotics poor knowledge of nutrition people died from infected cuts, simple injuries, colds No electricity Little indoor plumbing Water came from rivers or hand-dug wells Most people walked everywhere Very small, inefficient and ineffective federal gov No unemployment pay, welfare, food stamps, worker safety laws, paid vacation, paid sick leave, or medical insurance
