Classroom Management :

Classroom Management Conducted by Hind Shehayeb

Types of Classrooms: :

Types of Classrooms: # Which one do you like to teach? # Have you experienced such classes? # What do you think the main problem in the first class is? # What types of activities are likely to take place in the second class?

Management =? :

Management =? In teaching: it is the process of ensuring that classroom lessons run smoothly despite disruptive behavior by students. The term also implies the prevention of disruptive behavior. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classroom_management)

To what extent is management important in the classroom? :

To what extent is management important in the classroom? Imagine yourself delivering a speech about a very important issue when suddenly the microphone’s wire is cut. No matter how important your issue is and how clearly you are explaining it, it will be of no use because you can’t get it through to your listeners. “Of all the things I've done, the most vital is coordinating the talents of those who work for us and pointing them towards a certain goal”. Walt Disney (1901 - 1966) U.S. film producer and animator. This is very vital to our classrooms too.

List some types of reactions teachers may use to respond to students’ misbehavior. :

List some types of reactions teachers may use to respond to students’ misbehavior. # punish the students # ignore the problem # solve the problem What effect would each response have on the students and on you as a teacher? Which one do you strongly agree with? (let’s read together the table on page 6 in the handout “Moon: chapter 4”)

What makes students misbehave? :

What makes students misbehave? Students misbehave when: 1- they are bored. 2- they don’t understand the task they should work on or they don’t trust they can do it. 3- They don't have proper scaffolding by the teacher to complete the tasks.  4- they feel insecure. 5- they don’t feel the sense of belonging. 6- they don’t have a well-balanced relationship with the teacher. 7- they are not used to certain rules and routines in the classroom. 8- they don’t trust their teacher's capability of the lesson she's teaching. 9- they notice the teacher is unorganized.

How to minimize the undesired behavior? :

How to minimize the undesired behavior? = minimize the reasons that arise the unwanted behavior. To avoid students' boredom, teachers should vary the tasks and think back about her students' profile when designing the activities to plan those of their interest. Anticipate the likely effect the selected activities have on the children’s behavior. When including activities including physical movement-stirrers- follow them with “settlers” to calm students down again. Example: silent reading, individual writing…(Read) We have to make sure students understand the task very well by doing a formative check before we assign the task so that all students can feel they are capable of doing it. Provide proper scaffolding to help students be aware of the language, skills, and knowledge necessary to complete the tasks.

continued :

continued Students' self-esteem helps them feel secure and develop their sense of belonging. The rapport between the teacher and her students is very vital for the classroom management. It should be built on respect and love. Rules and routines cater the sense of secure. Children feel at ease when they know what to expect and this helps a lot . Routines save time and help teachers well-manage their classes. It's out of question that teachers should be well prepared for their classes. If students feel their teacher doesn’t know what to explain, they lose their confidence in her and thus misbehave. If you want your students to be organized and disciplined, you have to give them the model of this. When they feel you respect time they will do too and so on.

continued :

continued Always proceed slowly and gradually when introducing unfamiliar techniques.(Read) Outward calm and a quiet voice finds reflection in the children’s behavior and is more likely to allow you to manage positively and teach effectively. Try one-to-one reprimand with some students who have obvious problems of adjusting in the classroom.

How to develop students’ self-esteem and sense of belonging: :

How to develop students’ self-esteem and sense of belonging: by: Valuing children and their work : such as listening to what children have to say decorating the classroom with displays of work Catching them being good (CBG) Keeping expectations high Treating children as individuals (Read)

You: :

You: help to enhance children’s self-esteem and contribute towards feelings of success. And this has a positive influence on their motivation and levels of achievement as well as on their willingness to co-operate and make an effort in class. As a result you establish a positive working environment with children.

some advice before you device a management plan: :

some advice before you device a management plan: Establish the classroom rules and the consequences with your students. Make sure every student understand them very well. Try to change your plan of rewarding and reprimanding from time to time because young learners tend to feel bored when they get very much used to one. Always prepare your plan to be hierarchical. Apply your plan consistently and fairly. (Read) Make the rules explicit and state them clearly. (Read) Remind students of them every now and then. Make them few.

An Exemplary Plan :

An Exemplary Plan Establish a set of rules and their corresponding consequences with your students. Cut a blue colored cardboard into squares(5cmx5cm). You will need 3 for each child. Stamp the squares with the school stamp or just sign them yourself. Have a list of your students’ names ready with you. Tell students: when you follow the rules I will put for you a tick beside your name. When you have five ticks, you will get a card. Every three cards you will have a special gift. ( students may choose the types of gifts they like. For example: a visit to the video room, a period of playing computer games, …)

An Application :

An Application In pairs, establish a management plan for your classroom. Sami is a low-achiever in your class. He tends to interrupt his classmates and likes to leave his seat to move around in class no matter what type of activity is being done. Write a list of actions you take to help him adopt a more respectful behavior.
