Supporting Evidence: Supporting Evidence The Cochrane Review 2006 – “Community Interventions for Smoking Cessation in Young People” Towards a Future Without Tobacco – The Report of The Smoking Prevention Working Group 2006Objectives: Objectives To find out pupils views through a pupil conference and qualitative research. For each of the 10 secondary schools, together with the off-site schools, to draw up a plan for their own initiatives and to implement these plans. For forum theatre, dance and drama in S1/2/3 respectively to tackle smoking issues and choices. Evaluation: Evaluation Individual schools will evaluate their initiatives, submitting written reports November 2007/November 2008. Forum theatre, dance and drama will be evaluated by pupils and staff. Written report submitted October 2007/2008. Pupil attitudes will be surveyed pre initiatives and post project. Cessation services would be evaluated by Indicators of Success: Indicators of Success Numbers of young people becoming involved with projects Numbers of young people providing/receiving support Types and delivery of initiatives within individual schools. Results of pre and post initiatives attitude survey.Events: Events May 2006 - Consultation with school curriculum and guidance staff. August 2006 – First meeting of multi-agency steering group Sept. 2006 – Pupil conference Nov. 2006 – Individual school plans for initiatives.Pupil Conference: Pupil Conference 40 pupil representatives from 10 secondary schools across Dundee 5 groups of mixed representation discussed smoking cessation/prevention questions and feedback was recorded. Groups were led by young people who had undergone peer education training with the Peer Education Project.School Plans - Criteria: School Plans - Criteria Schools were encouraged to use the feedback from the pupil conference. Plans had to be inclusive. 10% of budget had to be kept aside for smoking cessation work. Cessation work could be flexible to meet the needs of the young people. Activities had to promote mental and/or physical health and well-being.School Plans -Examples of Proposed Activities: School Plans - Examples of Proposed Activities PSHE Resources Toilet Makeover Advert / Presentation Dance Class Rock Challenge – Be Your Best Foundation Parents / Carers Survey Beauty Therapy P7 Extra Curricular Activities Anti-Smoking Video Smoking Awareness Environmental Improvements Lunchtime Clubs Forum Theatre Tour: Forum Theatre TourDundee Upper Primary Schools Project: Dundee Upper Primary Schools Project Also funded through additional “Keep Well” monies until 2008. 3 strands; Dance and drama workshops Health Summer school Extension of Health Promoting Schools (HPS) Grants schemeDance and Drama Workshops: Dance and Drama Workshops Partnership work – Educational Development Service, NHS Tayside, The Space at Dundee College. 1 Day workshops Offered to all Dundee upper primary schools (P7) Facilitated by workers from the Performing Arts Development Team at “The Space”Health Summer School: Health Summer School Extension of Upper Primary Schools Workshop Project 2x5 day projects held at “The Space” 2x20 participants Culminating in a performance for parents, siblings, teachers. Health Promoting Schools Grants Scheme: Health Promoting Schools Grants Scheme Extension to scheme. Additional funding for primary schools in Dundee to carry out smoking prevention work.
