What was the Renaissance?: What was the Renaissance? Renaissance comes from the French word “rebirth” Rebirth of interest in classical ideas & culture Lead to artistic & intellectual awakening in Europe Why did it begin in Italy?: Why did it begin in Italy? Italian scholars focused on the secular (experimented) They were the “humanists” Italy wasn’t unified like France & England, divided by city-states, (competition!) Italy’s economy never plundered like rest of Europe during the Plague Connections with past glory (Roman Empire)What were the results?: What were the results? Florence = birthplace Cultural & artistic explosion in Italy Humanist beliefs helped artists express their own values & morals Artists made objects as life like & captivating as possible (perspective) Changed people’s thought process (worldview) How did the new ideas spread?: How did the new ideas spread? War, trade, travel, & newly invented printing press helped spread the ideas France, England, & N.
