50c March, April, May2007 By: Bianca ******** Aaron ****** is the Cool kid for February. He live in ******** County. He is an 8th Grader. His favorite food is any kind of sandwich. He loves to read about sports and jobs. His favorite sports are football, basketball, and baseball. His best friends are Dustin, Chris and Jordan. He has a brother and his name is Roger and no sisters. He was born in Ohio. He hates fighting with other boys. What he likes best about KSD is sports. By: Bianca ********** Ivan ****** is a February Cool Kid. He lives in ******, Kentucky. He is in 8th grade. His favorite subject is math. He loves to eat Mexican food. His favorite book is Bones. His favorite sports are football, swimming, and track. Two things we don’t know about Ivan. 1. His best friends are Jordan and Jonathan Ramser. 2. He has no sisters but he has brothers, David, Oscar, and George. Ivan said, ' I always chat with Chance in the dorm.' What does he like about KSD? He’s a member of the track team, STLP, and newspaper club. He got his cool compliments for paying attention in class, participating, being motivated, and good team work.

Jacob ****** won the coolest of the Month of March. He is from *******,KY. His favorite subjects are Math and Science. He is on the Honor Roll. He likes to read The Lemony Snickett of Unfortunate Events Series . His favorite sports are basketball and Soccer. He was on the REC Basketball Team. He loves to dance and to flirt with girls. He also likes to watch comedy (funny) movies. What he likes about KSD is better communication and friendly people. He earned cool compliments by good team work and nice manners. His advice for other students is 'Be a good role model, pay attention in class, and be on time for class.' Bradley ******* won the Coolest Kid for the month of March. He is from ****** County. His favorite subjects are science and math. He likes to read comic books. He is on level 6 and on Honor Roll. His favorite food is Subway. His favorite sports are Basketball and Bowling. He was on the REC Basketball Team and now he is on Track. There are 2 things people don’t know about him. He is a basketball player and he bowls. He likes KSD because he communicates with other deaf students. He earned Cool compliments by paying attention . His advise for other people is 'listen to teachers, and respect people.' By: Shanice White Christina ****** won coolest kid for April/May. She is from ******, KY. She is 16 years old. Her birthday is December 2. She is in the 8th grade. Her favorite sports are cheerleading and volleyball. Her favorite subjects are English and Science. She was hoping to be coolest kid and her dream came true. Two things people don’t know about her is she loves the computer and she played volleyball. What she likes the most about KSD is the sports. Her advise for other students is to pay attention and respect people. Charlotte ****** won the coolest kid for the month. She is from ******* County. Her favorite sports are basketball, football, volleyball and track. Her favorite subjects in school are English, Math and Science. She was hoping to be the coolest kid. Three things people don’t know about her are: she has a MySpace, her best friends are Shanice White, Brittany Seward, Amanda Wyatt, and Courtney Parker, she loves to pick on people to make them laugh. She likes KSD because she likes to socialize with other deaf students. Her advise for students is respect people, be nice to people and pay attention in class.

REC BASKETBALL By: Alexio ******* The middle school recreation basketball team won the championship. They won the tournament. They had a party at Cici’s pizza on March 28, 2007. The 6th grade and 7th graders who played were Chance ******, Corey ******, Ben ******, Ethan ******, Michael ******, Jacob ****** and Trevor ******. Ethan’s mom gave all of the players hoodies for congratulations. Thanks to Ethan’s mom and Congratulations to the team! TRACK By: Bianca Lois Dubree The track teams began practice on March 14. Six middle school students are members. Lisa Kingsley is the coach for the girls and Kevin Hamilton is coach for the boys. This year the only middle school girl on the team is Shanice ******. She competes in the 100M, shot put, 4 x 100 relay and 4 x 200 relay. The boys are Drew ******, (he just recently joined the team). Andrew ****** who competes as a long distance runner. Ivan ****** competes in the shot put competition. Aaron ****** and Bradley ****** are on relay teams and Alec ****** competes in field events. By: Jacob ****** The Kentucky legislature is voting on the exercise bill and it may become law! The exercise bill says Elementary and middle school kids need to exercise for 30 minutes a day or 150 minutes a week. What should we do for 30 minutes a day if the law passes? Charlotte: PE, weightlifting Shanice: walk a mile Bianca: walk a mile Aaron: weightlifting Ivan: run Slay: walk around the block Tyler: run Alexio: run Mrs. Arnold: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday organized PE in the gym, Tuesday, Thursday free play (jump rope, 4 square, Frisbees) outside. Bradley: basketball in the gym (PE) Arielle: play outside like on Fridays KSD middle school students on the Varsity track team are: Alec ******, Bradley ******, Shanice ******, Ivan ******, Aaron ******, Andrew ******, and Drew ******.

The middle school staff and students are asked to answer a question in writing on a bulletin board in the hall each week. One question during the month of April was: Who is the one woman (past or present) that you would like to meet and why? The following are some of the answers written. Bradley : I want to met crazy lady, Britney Spears and ask her about rehab. Chance : I want to meet hot Jessica Simpson and ask, 'How is your life?' Ms. Slay: I would like to meet Grace Coolidge, the First Lady of President Calvin Coolidge. She worked with deaf children as a teacher a t the Clarke School for the Deaf in Massachusetts. I would like to ask her what it was really like being the first lady. Tyler : I would like to meet Ellen DeGeneres because she is rich and famous and I want to ask her why is she doing a TV show. Shanice : I would like to meet Keyshia Cole because she is my favorite singer. She can help me sing songs. Mrs. Meckes: I would want to meet Abigail Adams because she had a political voice when women were not supposed to have an opinion. Her husband, John, valued what she had to say. She was also not afraid to scold Thomas Jefferson when he and her husband were feuding. Andrew : I want to meet Lyndsey Lohan. I really like her because she is pretty and I want to talk to her. David : I want to meet two women, Emma Watson and Angelina Jolie. I want them to be my best friends and I will teach them sign and they will become neat with signing to deaf people. I love them! Mrs. Arnold: Princess Diana, so I could ask her what it was really like being part of the royal family. Jacob : I would like to meet Syhaira Knowles-Smith. That is Beyonce’s cousin. Why? Because she is a good actress. I saw her recently in 'Bring I On, All or Nothing'/ It is a cheerleader movie. It is pretty good. Arielle : I want to meet the Cheetah Girls because they are my favorite! Ivan : I want to meet Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen. I like their TV show and they are hot. Ms. Disch: I would like to meet Amelia Earhart. I am curious to learn about her experiences flying in the 1930’s. Also, I am curious to learn how the men treated her since aviation was male-dominated. Charlotte : I would meet Rihanna, Beyonce Knowles, and Brandy. Brittany : I want to meet Brandy. She is pretty. She is my favorite.

The winners from the meeting room contest were: 1st Bradley ******, 2nd Jacob ******, 3rd Ivan ****** The winner from Ms. Disch’s room were: 1st Charlotte ******, 2nd Bianca ******, 3rd Arielle ******. The end-of-the-year spelling bee will take place on May 18 starting at 8:30. The winners will receive a cash prize. The students have a list of almost 300 words to study.

by: Arielle Plummer On March 2, 2007, the middle school celebrated with Linda Cannon 'Reading captions across America' for Dr. Susses’s birthday and read across America Day. They watched a movie that helped them practice to read captions. All of the students and staff watched a movie and had snacks and drinks. The kids had a lot of fun. The movie they watched was called 'Holes'. Middle school students joined different culture and arts groups. Students are learning different cultures in the areas of 'Latin American,' 'Western Africa,' and 'Early American.' 'I really learn and enjoy arts and humanities,' said Ivan. Students researched and practiced about culture, and art, dance, music, and drama for each. Middle school will have a cultural arts fair on May 11. The middle school students will research and practice performances in their culture and arts groups to get ready for the fair. Students will have a booth with displays, food, and performances. Everyone is welcome to attend. By: Tyler Watts The Student Council sponsored the spring dance. The theme was Mardi Gras. The dance was on April 12 at Brady Hall Multi- Purpose room from 6:00-9:00. The had games, music, dance, and food. Arielle works on her landscape painting.

By: Aaron ****** Spring break was March 30- April 9th. Before the break, students were asked, 'What are your plans for spring break?' Charlotte: to play games, the Sims 2. Shanice: to go to Illinois. Jacob: to ride my bike and skateboard. Ivan: to play Xbox games and play outside. Alexio: to go to a friend’s house Arielle: to go fishing and get 2 new puppies. Tyler: fishing at the lake. Bradley: to play basketball outside. By: Tyler ****** On March 1,2007 student council had a book and bake sale at Lee hall to raise money to by baby books to give to the hospital. They raised $131 and donated the books for to hospital for newborn babies to encourage reading. Thank to those that came. Congratulation Students Council member and sponsors on a good job.. On April 18, KSD middle school held their 3rd Book talk. Eighteen students participated. They could read one of the following books: Captain Underpants, Seabiscuit, Bud, Not Buddy, and The Courage of Sarah Noble. Students answered questions about the book after they read it to get the privilege to participate. Staff and students were able to discuss the book while enjoying a picnic outside on the lawn of Lee Hall. A Walker Hall student looks over the choice of books. Mrs. Gay and Bianca work the bake goods booth. Mr. Lange discusses a book with his group.

On April 12 and 13 the middle school had two guest artists. Ya Ya and Harlina Chura-Diallo present residents of Louisville came to KSD to teach students about West African culture. Ya Ya is originally from the West African country of Mali. They taught the students traditional West African dance, drumming, clothing, money, and other facts. They were able to visit KSD by a grant from KSD’s Foundation. YaYa talked a bit about the school he is building to teach young people of West Africa the traditions and culture so that the culture will not die. The KSD students wanted to make sure that he did not forget about the deaf students in West Africa. YaYa said he would remember them. Harlina demonstrates a West African dance move while Ya Ya plays the drums. Chance, Ben and Ivan play the drums. Bianca, Charlotte, Arielle, and Christina try on the head wrap called N Koun Sirila. Bianca, Charlotte, Michael and Andrew practice the West African Dance. Ya Ya Chura-Diallo demonstrates West African drumming.
