Premium member Presentation Transcript Overview HISP-SA: Overview HISP-SA Aim of presentation: Aim of presentation Describe the development of the HISP-SA team Describe some of the activities in which HISP-SA is involved Explore some of the challenges for HISP-SA Slide3: 1994 - 1998 1998-present Historical development of HISP-SA Slide4: Historical development of HISP-SA 1999 DHIS implemented country wide DHIS Development 1994 - 1998 1998 DHIS implemented in one province Critical Steps in HISP-SA Development: Critical Steps in HISP-SA Development 1994 - Began as a team located at UWC with one team member funded through University of Oslo 1998 - Developed part-time contracts with UWC and contracted as individuals to EQUITY Project (USAID funded) 2000 – Established not-for-profit organisation which contracted individuals as employees/consultants Currently: Manager (50% Mx, 50% technical) Administrator Programming team: Program team leader (PhD student) Programmer Some products purchased through private company Team members: 2 salaried with HISP-SA 4 consultants (full-time) 2 part-time consultants (50% and 25%) Reasons for establishing HISP-SA: Reasons for establishing HISP-SA To provide a vehicle for HISP-SA team to contract with funders for work in SA and abroad Cross-subsidise university salary rates To enable the HISP team to benefit from both academic and private sector initiatives To provide funds that can be used for ongoing development of the software and the HISP team as a whole Improve efficiency as a Not-for-Profit, Non-Governmental Organisation Current HISP Activities in SA: Current HISP Activities in SA Country-wide support for provincial managers on information systems (3 year project) Focus in 4 provinces Additional projects in selected provinces Development of DHIS software and modules: Version 1.4 Disease surveillance module Emergency medical services module Human resources module The reporting units for the DHIS: The reporting units for the DHIS Specific HISP team activities: Specific HISP team activities Slide10: South Africa Rural nodes 1999 - 2003 Slide11: EQUITY Project support 1998-2003 1999 - present 1998-present Slide12: ECP Hospitals project 2004/2005 Other HISP activities:: Other HISP activities: DHIS email list very active A number of manuals have been completed Conducting a situational analysis for PHC datasets Using information for action 5 day course (Trainers Guide) GIS Manual GIS Trainers Guide Trainers guide for Intermediate and Advanced Course Using the TALI Tool for assessing levels of information use UWC Winter School courses HISP-SA Activities outside of SA: HISP-SA Activities outside of SA Nigeria - 3 + 2 states From 2006 hopefully a three year contract for support Malawi - 8 districts (2002-2006) Botswana – BEANISH support and training Tanzania – HMIS assessment and report Swaziland - HMIS assessment and report Namibia – overview of information systems Software Development: Software Development New developments Constraints of current situation: Very dependant on Calle Slow development of software cf. needs Access/Windows dependant Opportunities: Increased activity in India International resources and networks Challenges for HISP-SA: Challenges for HISP-SA Regarding Information Systems: encourage managers to use the data to manage and plan services improve data quality Gain support for development of the software As an organisation: Continue to grow Develop greater security to be a sustainable organisation Software development: Lessen dependancy on individuals and strengthen support from the international network You do not have the permission to view this presentation.
