1 Kings 11:1-2:

Interpretation of Prophecy:

Interpretation of Prophecy A. Interpret prophecy literally. ~ "When the plain sense of Scripture makes makes common sense, seek no other sense." Take every word at its primary, ordinary, usual, literal meaning unless the facts of the immediate context studied in the light of related passages and fundamental truths indicate clearly otherwise. Interpret prophecy in light of other prophecy . (2 Peter 1:20-21)

Interpretation of Prophecy:

Interpretation of Prophecy C. Keep in mind the law of double reference. ~ This law refers to those times when two events events widely separated in time of fulfillment are brought together in the scope of one prophecy. (e.g. Isaiah 61:1-2 & Luke 4:17-21 / Daniel 12:2 & two resurrections) D. Interpret obscure passages in light of the clear passages. 1. When considering difficult passages, consider related passages that are clear. 2. Look for God to fulfill prophecy in the future as He has fulfilled it in the past.

Prophecy You will note that the Minor Prophets as they appear in our Bible are grouped according to the historical periods they cover: Hosea - Micah (prior to fall of Northern Kingdom); Nahum - Zephaniah (prior to fall of Southern Kingdom); Haggai - Malachi (following Return from Exile).

Definitions of a Prophet:

Definitions of a Prophet "a speaker of or for God. His words are not the production of his own spirit but come from a higher source." "In both the Old and New Testaments (a prophet) is one who, under the influence of the Holy Spirit, speaks the words and the thoughts of God, whether they relate to the past, to the present, or to the future." 3. "One who spoke in God's stead."

Definitions of a Prophet:

Definitions of a Prophet "God said to Moses that Aaron would be 'thy spokesman...a mouth' (Exodus 4:16); also, He said that Aaron would be Moses‘ 'prophet' (Exodus 7:1). Therefore, as a prophet he was a spokesman, a mouth. The prophet of Jehovah then would be the mouth of Jehovah." A prophet might foretell the future or " forthtell " the Word of God for the present situation.

Four Ways a Prophet Received His Message:

Four Ways a Prophet Received His Message vision (Obadiah 1; Amos 1:1) – something seen burden (Nahum 1:1; Habakkuk 1:1) – something felt revelation (Micah 1:1; Hosea 1:1) – something experienced event (Hosea 1:2-3; Joel 1:4) – something witnessed
