So Far!!My Intentions with This Video: My Intentions with This Video To Win Eastcoastprepper’s Contest!!! (http://www.youtube.com/user/EastCoastPrepper) To raise awareness about survival kits and preparedness To do my first videoWho am I?: Who am I? At its simplest I am a 21 year old female from a small state who is all about being self sufficient. I’m a college student and I write, bake, and garden as my primary sources of money. I’m still new to the prepping lifestyle so feel free to comment and let me know what you think and any suggestions you may have. This is my first video and I cannot find my webcam so I may redo it at another time. Thanks!Sections: Sections When I created my own survival kit and preparations I started with ten foundations that I believe are important not only to survive but to thrive. The ten foundations: Air, Water, Food, Shelter & Location, Fire, Comfort & Entertainment, Safety & Protection, Sanitation & Medical, Sustainability, and Communication. Bear with me as I tell you what I have and what I still need to acquire for my kit.Air: Air The Items I have in my survival kit for air are: Breathing Masks and Bandanas At this point I am trying to focus on making other purchases (primarily on protection) so this is basically complete. In the future, if I can afford it, I may get a gas mask.Water: Water I am very fortunate (or sometimes I feel unfortunate) to live by quite a few lakes and other small bodies of water. In my survival kit I have: 2 water filter straws, a way to filter and then boil any water I come across, Iodine, and a starting supply of 4lbs of water. I would like to add: a K atadyn water filter, when I can afford it (the 12k gallon capacity one.)Water Bottle/Food Container: Water Bottle/Food ContainerFood (primary): Food (primary) I am not an expert hunter. The reason why I have so much food in my kit is because I do not believe if I had to evacuate that I could easily find food. So in my kit I have a lot of dehydrated fruits and vegetables. In my survival kit I also have 3 canned soup meals to eat and then for later uses. Also included: ramen, oatmeal, sugar, pasta sides, rice, and powdered milk. At my best guess, I haven’t done the calorie tally, but I would say I have at least a few weeks worth of food. I also have a Walmart lightweight mess kit, plastic silverware, and some metal silverware.Mess Kit: Mess KitMess Kit Contents: Mess Kit Contents Ziploc bags Plastic Silverware Hot Chocolate Mixes (3) Pasta Side (1) Beans (2) Napkins/Toilet Paper Trash Bags (2) Water Bottle (filled with rice)Contents Continued : Contents Continued Frying Pan Cup Pot Lid Sugar Packets Candy Lighter Beans (2) NapkinsFood (secondary): Food (secondary) I live by quite a bit of water that has plenty of fish and other aquatic creatures. I call this secondary food because while I’m consuming my primary food I will try my best to hunt and gather. In my survival kit I have: a self made binder on wild edibles and another self made survival binder on how to make primitive spears, bows & arrows, sling shots etc. I don’t have snare wire, but I make jewelry and the wire I use looks like it can do the job. I also don’t have fishing line or hooks, I have a butterfly net that I think might be more helpful to me. Things I want to get in the near future: a hunting rifle. In my household there is a hunting rifle, but it is not mine…Jewelry/Snare Wire : Jewelry/Snare Wire You can kind of see how thin it is compared to my hand.Shelter & Location: Shelter & Location If I ever had to evacuate, my ultimate goal would be to head back to the town I grew up in (a very rural area). If that goal wasn’t attainable for some reason I would head to the local park; It’s pretty big and has a nice size lake that I’ve fished in before. These are my two “bug out locations.” Thanks to EastCoastPrepper for keeping me thinking about a bug out location. http://www.youtube.com/user/EastCoastPrepper#p/u/37/LPCanK2N3AkShelter & Location (continued): Shelter & Location (continued) In my survival kit I have: a four person tent (weighs less than 10lbs), lots of tarps and drop cloths, cheap rope, and twine. I also have some fleece fabric and some lightweight cotton feeling fabric left over from sewing projects. Those are my blankets/ponchos. In the near future I would like to get: some 550 paracord and a few more tarps.Fire: Fire In my fire section I also include light and electricity. In my survival kit I have: lighters, a few cheapie light sticks, cheapie flashlights, batteries for those flashlights, 2 hand crank flashlights, petroleum soaked cotton balls, magnesium fire starter, 2 5.00 head lamps, and a few emergency and tea light candles.Fire Starter: Fire Starter I got these on sale at Harbor Freight. They weren’t more than $3.00.Tinder Holder/Container: Tinder Holder/Container This is just a vitamin bottle that I didn’t want to throw away. So I stuffed it with cotton balls. Lightweight, Waterproof, and Free!Fire (continued): Fire (continued) I would like to add to my kit, in the future: a small solar battery charger, rechargeable batteries, and a few more head lamps. Also a hand crank radio/flashlight/charger combo.Comfort & Entertainment: Comfort & Entertainment Luckily for me I have a lot of hobbies that I can bring with me. I crochet and sew. I love to read, write, and I play a lot of different card games. In my survival kit for comfort and entertainment I have: yarn, sewing needles, thread, crochet needs, playing cards, paper, dice, pencils, coloring pencils, small sharpener, and a very vivid imagination. I also have little butterscotch and caramel candies stuck in a lot of nooks for some pick me ups.Safety & Protection: Safety & Protection For safety & protection right now all I would have is my basic hand combat skills (learned from youtube and practiced at home), some pepper spray, my machete, and whatever I can pick up from my surroundings. I do not feel that is enough but until I can save enough money for the .38 I want, that will have to do.Sanitation & Medical: Sanitation & Medical I bought several dollar tree mini medical kits and added to them. They come with bandaids and a few alcohol wipes. In my survival kit (medical): I have gauze, alcohol wipes, hydrogen peroxide, Advil, Vitamins (men/women/vitamin c), rubbing alcohol, iodine, medical tape, tweezers, mani / pedi kit, hand sanitizer, chap stick, chest rub, allergy meds, cough drops, baking soda, ivory soap, wash cloth, hand towel, qtips … continued on next slide.Pocket First Aid Kit: Pocket First Aid KitSanitation & Medical (continued): Sanitation & Medical (continued) Gloves, insect repellent, basil leaves, lotion, little hotel bottles of shampoo, conditioner, soap, and mouthwash, T ylenol, N eosporin, triple antibiotic cream, disposable pads, reusable pads, toilet paper, feminine wipes, wet ones wipes, plastic bags, petroleum jelly, razors, scissors, duct tape, toothbrushes, toothpaste, safety pins, and some other little things like rubber bands, etc. I also intend to take an EMT class ($295.00) and get a lot more medical supplies.Sustainability: Sustainability I love to garden. I wouldn’t be caught dead without some seeds to grow some food. If I were to evacuate I would need to not only hunt and gather but try my best to grow my own food. In my survival kit I have plenty of seeds.Sustainability (Seeds): Sustainability (Seeds) Seeds: Radishes, Beets, Peas, Beans, Squash, Corn, Turnips, Marigolds, and Broccoli. In all honesty if something is causing you to bug out, it may be for more than 3 days until you can get settled again. Having these lightweight backups is worth it to me!Sustainability (continued): Sustainability (continued) Since this kit is for the kind of, “I’m never going back to that place,” situation; I feel it is very important to be sustainable wherever you go. Therefore I have in my survival kit a self made binder that has information on a lot of how to stuff: bullet making, metalworking, log home building, medical, soap-making, sewing, etc. I also try to learn or use a skill I feel will be necessary in a survival situation. I believe in the saying, “the more you know, the less you need.”Sustainability: Sustainability My multi tool, machete, and information binder.Sustainability (continued 3): Sustainability (continued 3) I have a few pocket knives in a few different mini kits. My primary knife is the survival knife that is at harbor freight (it was on sale… I couldn’t resist) I also have a machete, axe, mini shovel, folding saw, Z iploc bags (1G), knife sharpener, brush, 2 buckets, aluminum foil, 2 pr leather gloves, Colombia little multi tool, ivory soap, my opposite seasonal clothing (right now it has winter clothing in it), and well Knowledge!!!!Communication: Communication Primary (for signaling): In my survival kit I have two mirrors, a whistle, and a bright yellow rain poncho. Secondary (for communicating with others): In my survival kit I would like to add some walkie-talkies. Until then I suggest everyone in my unit learn bird calls or stay real close together. The Bag: The Bag A $9.00 bookbag from Walmart . It has two pockets. I can already hear, “there’s no way all that stuff is those little high school kid book bag..” You’re right it’s not. But this is pack that I keep on my back.Other Bags I use: Other Bags I use Timberland Book Bags. Tote BagTo Wrap It Up: To Wrap It Up My kit might seem really heavy but you haven’t seen it in action. It’s not just in the book bag. A lot of these things fit on my body or in my pockets. I don’t own a lot of clothing. All of my jeans/pants have hidden pockets in them that I could easily tuck a mini meal or something else useful. (I guess that’s another video.)Some of my bug out bag content kits: Some of my bug out bag content kits (Sorry the picture is so dark) You can see all the different containers I have for each foundation.Continued: Continued The total weight of everything I would have on my body is less than 60 pounds. I know that seems like a lot of weight but like I said its pretty well distributed. I’ve tried walking with the kit and a few grab and go buckets (for laundry and gathering etc.) and I’ve done just fine.Just some more side notes: Just some more side notes Each foundation I spoke of has its own container, whether it be a heavy duty ziploc bag or a tin container. As you can see I have a pretty long ways to go. This is my, “oh $#*& I gotta get out here!!!” bag…. So far!! (thanks to all the prepping channels… like EastCoastPrepper , I have a ton of ideas that I need to add to my kit) If I had time to evacuate I would definitely bring my ready to go rolling suitcase that has extenders in it.
