Accelerated Reader at Castle Hills Elementary School Home of the Reading Dragons Kendra Roberts 2004

Increased Reading = Growth: 

Increased Reading = Growth Guided independent reading practice accelerates reading growth for all students. Self-selected reading increases student motivation. Immediate quiz scores provide feedback. Reading success with A.R. produces increased reading achievement.

Keys to a Successful AR Program: 

Keys to a Successful AR Program Ready access to a variety of literature. Large selection of fiction and non-fiction texts. Wide range of leveled texts. Accelerated Reader quizzes to accompany library and classroom literature. Minimum of two networked computers per classroom.

Financial Resources: 

Financial Resources State of Delaware Commendable School Grant, 2002. PTA support of Reading Dragon’s Book Club. PTA contributions toward AR incentives. MBNA Read to Succeed Grant for 2002-2003 and for 2003-2004 school years. Library and Title I funds appropriated for books and quizzes

Parent – School Partners: 

Parent – School Partners Parents - important partners toward student achievement. At-home reading participation. Parents monitoring book exchanges. PTA participation School faculty involvement

STAR Testing: 

STAR Testing Students in Grades 2 – 5 take STAR computer literacy test in the fall, winter and spring. STAR test shows book level reading range for each child - Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). ZPD helps produce success, not frustration. Student Grade Equivalency scores help teachers set reading goals for each student.

Accelerated Reader Quizzes: 

Accelerated Reader Quizzes Students self-select books within ZPD. Students take AR computer quiz for each book read. Students earn points based on quiz scores. Students accumulate points toward personal point goal. School recognizes and celebrates student reading success.

Color Coded Book Levels: 

Color Coded Book Levels 0.1 – 1.9 Yellow 2.0 – 2.9 Green 3.0 – 3.9 Red 4.0 – 4.9 Blue 5.0 - 5.9 Orange 6.0 and above White

The Reading Dragon’s Challenge: 

The Reading Dragon’s Challenge Book level increases with AR success. Goal – AR quiz average of at least 80-85% correct. Percentages of point goal entitles students to receive recognition and incentives in the Dragon’s Lair. Principal announces student goal reachers each week on the PA system.

Sample Student Participation: 

Sample Student Participation Danny Dragon’s STAR - Grade Equivalent Score was 2.1 Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) for Danny Dragon is 2.1 - 3.1. Danny’s quiz average goal is 80 – 85%. Software tracks Danny’s progress by recording results of each quiz.

Celebrations Invitation to enter the Dragon’s Lair as students reach percentages of point goals. End of marking period Celebrations for those reaching point goals with targeted average.
