A Brief History : A Brief History Originally founded in 1895 in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park Earthquakes have been the museum’s nemesis since 1906 Lost federal insurance 1997 reconstruction effort begins Demoed in 2002 New building opened October 15, 2005


Let’s Talk Money : Let’s Talk Money Built in 1895 for $75,000 USD (today’s) -Money left over from the California Mid-Winter Exposition of 1894 Renovated several times all through private charity New building $202 Million USD Over $175 Million of that from over 7000 private donors


Who’s Wearing the Pants : Who’s Wearing the Pants Owned and operated by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (FAMSF) Includes the Legion of Honor Mrs. Dede Wilsey, President of FAMSF - personally donated $10 Million to the effort FAMSF is a public entity but is funded purely by the private sector


The Environment : The Environment 37% smaller footprint than original building Twice as much interior functional space Allows a lot natural light in museum Façade blends in with the park Built on same site as old building


The Social Scene : The Social Scene Public was very involved in the decisions Love-Hate relationship The Golden Gate Park is a very personal venue for many leaving hesitation Existing paths were incorporated in to the new facility
