State of art Slide3: Science case: WSO/UV is a multipurpose observatory. Science interests of national WSO/UV groups do not totally coincide. This is natural. Time is running; new items appear. We need to update a core program. This should remain an ambitious and prospective one. Recent and coming events in the direction: JD4 at GA in Prague – August 2006 The IAU Symposium to be held end of May 2007 at El Escorial (Madrid, Spain) entitled: "The UV window to the Universe". On the WSO/UV core program(items of most interest for astronomical community in Russia): On the WSO/UV core program (items of most interest for astronomical community in Russia) The Cosmic Web (history of reionization, search for baryons, SNI as a “standard candle”) Star formation and evolution of galaxies Activity on stars (obs. support of mass transfer theory in CB, physics of WD etc.) The early evolution of the Sun and its interaction with the young planetary disk V. Atmospheres of exoplanetsSlide5: Ultraviolet Universe, 2001 May, 2006 Science with WSO/UVThe WSO/UV Implementation Committee (WIC): The WSO/UV Implementation Committee (WIC) * - active participantsSlide7: Telescope: T-170M, Russia. 1.7 m diameter, primary range 110 - 340 nm, Spectrographs: UVES, VUVES, R 5-6 x 104; Germany, LSS, R 2500, China with cooperation (UK, Germany, France, Ukraine,..). Imaging: FCU, Italy Рrimary range 110 - 340 nm, 2 UV Imagers: one for max. spatial resolution (~ 0.1 arcsec); one for max. sensitivity; and one imager for visual domain Platform: “Navigator”, Russia Orbit: geosynchronous one with i=51.8o is considered as working orbit Launcher, launch: “ZENIT 2SB”, Russia Ground Segment: Russia, Spain (contributions from Italy, China, Ukraine,South Africa … are being considered) WSO/UV mission modelSlide8: WSO/UV (also local name Spectrum-UV is used) Project is considered by Roscosmos and by the RAS as one of the key projects in space science program. The project is included in the Federal Space Program of Russia for 2006-2015. Launch is scheduled for year 2010. Funding is realistic though tight. WSO/UV in RussiaSlide9: Telescope T-170M is being designed/manufactured. Lack of information on science instrumentation slows down the progress. Platform “Navigator” is designed and mock-up are under tests. GS (Russian centers) are under design. Orbit is under revision. WSO/UV in Russia (ctd.)WSO/UV orbit (a variant of geosynchronous orbit, i=51.8o): WSO/UV orbit (a variant of geosynchronous orbit, i=51.8o) Slide11: See presentations of V.Makarov E.Skripunov M.Ilyasov on technical planning of the Project, design, interfaces, various requirements etc. M.Yushkin on spectrographs M.Sachkov on the Ground Segment (GS)Slide12: China CNSA and CAS decided to participate in LSS (as responsible partner for the LSS) and to consider participation in GS (information on open items follows as part 2 of this presentation) WSO/UV in the worldSlide13: In the frame of Program of China-Russia Cooperation in space for period 2004 -2006 the sub-group meeting on World Space Observatory–Ultraviolet (WSO/UV) was held September 04-05, 2006 in Moscow, as a preparatory activity to the Seventh Meeting of Subcomission of China-Russia collaboration in Space held in Moscow Sept 08, 2006. In the course of the submeeting the results of all the previous bilateral meetings (WSO/UV meetings in Beijing June 2005 and May 2006, WSO/UV WIC meeting in Moscow June 2006) as well as information on the national activities were analyzed. It was confirmed that Russia and China are both strongly interested in collaboration on the WSO/UV project. Russia confirmed all the duties (contributions) from the Russian side. China confirms the contributions to the project, which are as follows: China participates in determining the science case of the Project China takes the responsibility for the design and construction of the Long Slit Spectrometer (the LSS) China will participate in the Ground Segment of the Project. This includes involvement of ground station(s) and participation in the redundant Mission Operation Center. From minutes of (CNSA+CAS) – (Roscomos+RAS) meeting on WSO/UVSlide14: Germany DLR is waiting for progress with other instruments. HIRDES Phase B1 is successfully completed in 2006. The result is “Instrument Interface Control Document”: - by Kayser-Threde Co.). WSO/UV in the world (ctd.)Slide15: Italy Decision of ASI to participate in the Project is appeared in 2006. The contract between ASI and FCU consortium in Italy is to be signed in few weeks. Important result of the Meeting in Rome 5-7 Dec 2006 is a decision of ASI and Roscomos to sign a bilateral agreement on collaboration asap. A draft agreement is under revision by Italian and Russian sides. WSO/UV in the world (ctd.)Slide16: Spain (from minutes of recent meeting) A meeting of Russia-Spain working group on the World Space Observatory–Ultraviolet (WSO/UV) Project was held November 14, 2006 in Moscow. …… It was recognized that parameters of collaboration (responsibilities, time plan etc.) should be described in a bilateral agreement between Roscomos and CDTI. The CDTI will be provided by Roscosmos with the draft agreement not later than 21-st of November, 2006. CDTI will consider the draft agreement and not later than December 20, 2006 will provide Roscomos with a revised version of agreement. Both sides expect that mutually adopted agreement will be signed by heads of Roscomos and CDTI in January 2006. WSO/UV in the world (ctd.)Slide17: Ukraine In September 2006 heads of CrAO confirmed their major contribution - mirror coatings and verification of optical system. Republic of South Africa During the visit of Russia President Mr.Putin authorities of the RSA confirmed their interest and willingness to participate in GS for Russian space program including WSO/UV. Israel, India, Mexico Permanently express interest in the Project. WSO/UV in the world (ctd.)Slide18: 2. Open questions Slide19: Open questions (to be answered at the meeting or in reasonably short time after the meeting) LSS Technical features required for design of the instrumental compartment (see presentations of Skripunov). Probable time schedule for design and delivery. GS Contribution of China. General When MoU (if it is still of need) or relevant agreement could be signed?
