Lesson Objectives: 

Lesson Objectives The importance of the school in promoting PE. The requirements of the national curriculum. Your school PE curriculum and extra curricular activities.

Promotion of PE in Schools: 

Promotion of PE in Schools Everyone participates in PE at school. This provides schools with the greatest opportunity to promote positive attitudes towards healthy and active lifestyles. The main aim of PE should be to encourage lifelong participation. This can be done through creating opportunities at school to experience a range of activities.

The National curriculum for PE: 

The National curriculum for PE Q: What is the National Curriculum? It is a document produced by the government (DfEE) in order to raise the standard of PE in schools. It sets out the content of what should be taught as well as setting attainment targets. The government insist all pupils up to 16 should have 2 hours of PE a week.

The National Curriculum Cont….: 

The National Curriculum Cont…. There are 4 key stages up to GCSE, the government have set out different programmes of study for each one. These programmes of studies are linked to the 6 activity areas set out in the curriculum. Q: Can you list all 6 activity areas?

Learning across Key stages: 

Learning across Key stages The government say “all pupils must have a broad and balanced curriculum” Q: What does this statement mean? A: Pupils should be experiencing and learning across a range of activities while at school. This should enable them to find an activity they enjoy and will carry on after they leave school.

Learning across the Key stages cont………. At key stage 1 pupils should: Learn across 3 activity areas. These are dance, games and gymnastics

Key stage 2: 

Key stage 2 At Key stage 2 pupils should: Learn across 5 activity areas. These must be dance, games and gymnastics. They then must be taught 2 of the following: Swimming, athletics and OAA

Key stage 3: 

Key stage 3 At key stage 3 pupils should: Learn across 4 activity areas: These should include games activities. And then 3 of the following BUT 1 of which must be gym or dance. Dance, gym, Swimming, athletics and OAA.

Key stage 4: 

Key stage 4 At key stage 4 pupils should: Learn across 2 activity areas. There is no specification as to which ones.

Broad and Balanced curriculum?: 

Broad and Balanced curriculum? Q: Do you think that the government have provided YOU with a broad and balanced curriculum? A: it is questionable, why should 3 activity areas be taught at KS 1 and only 2 at KS 3? You can go through your whole school life with out participating in OAA and Swimming. Q: What do many adults participate in?

Extra Curricular activities: 

Extra Curricular activities Q: What are extra curricular activities? It is sport organised by schools but conducted out of school time. Not so much teaching but more about experience, enjoyment and improving. An excellent way to promote life long participation.

Lesson Objectives To investigate the different roles that you have experienced in PE lessons. To highlight the various course/awards which are on offer to you. Highlight the fors and against of these courses.

Adopting different roles: 

Adopting different roles Q: Why do you think that schools encourage you to try different roles? A: So everyone will be able to find a role in sport that they enjoy. Some people don’t like performing but may love coaching.

Different roles in PE and sport: 

Different roles in PE and sport Aim: To come up with all the different roles that you believe PE and Sport can offer. E.G. The performer Do this in pairs by completing the thought shower on the work sheet. You must state the role and the responsibility of that role.

Performer: 

Performer This is the person that takes part in the physical activity. E.G. performing the throw. They may be trying to improve their technique or the personal best.

Official: 

Official For example this could be an umpire in netball or a referee in football. They develop their knowledge and understanding of the rules. They take on a role of responsibility

Observer: 

Observer This person will watch a person or group of people perform. E.G. They will be the audience in a dance lesson. They should give constructive feedback on the performance. E.G. “The use of different levels really stood out”.

The Coach: 

The Coach This person will watch a performer. E.G. watch a performer sprinting. This person should then give more specific feedback on the performers technique. E.G. “You need to focus on getting a higher knee lift”.

The Captain: 

The Captain This person will take responsibility on/off the pitch. They make decisions for the team, make changes on the pitch. They should be a source of motivation!

Leader: 

Leader This person is more likely to be involved in outdoor activities. E.G. Orienteering. They will be responsible for making sure that all people are present at all times etc. They are also a source of motivation!

Organiser: 

Organiser There is normally an organiser involved in most sports. They are normally responsible for arranging fixtures, in charge of equipment, arranging end of season parties and prize evenings!!

Choreographer: 

Choreographer This person is normally involved with Dance or gymnastics. This person has the role of creating a routine or a sequence and normally putting it to music.

Different courses/awards There are many different courses or award schemes that you can follow in PE or sports studies. Q :Why do you think that these courses and awards have been created?

Different courses/awards in PE A: It raises the profile of the subject Allows you to participate in physical activity and learn about it while gaining a qualification. Can help you get a job in later life. Q :How many can you list?

Fors and Against. Start now and finish for homework. Write an argument on the computer listing the fors and against for an accredited award in PE for example GCSE.
