FENS NEUROSCIENCE SCHOOLS: FENS NEUROSCIENCE SCHOOLS
FENS has funded:
3 summer schools in 2001
5 summer schools in 2003
5 winter schools from 2001- 2004 2007 NENS GENERAL MEETING TOT = 13 schools FENS-IBRO ACTION COORDINATED BY PENS
HISTORY OF FENS/IBRO COLLABORATION : HISTORY OF FENS/IBRO COLLABORATION 2003
5/7 schools supported by IBRO in Europe were also financed by FENS
2004
3/6 schools were organized jointly
2001-2004
IBRO has sponsored 21 schools in Europe (East and West)
2001-2003 330 students have attended the IBRO schools in Europe, a large proportion of these schools were organized in conjunction with FENS FENS-IBRO ACTION COORDINATED BY PENS
FENS educational mandate: FENS educational mandate goal: to ensure the development of core schools that are repeated in the same place as summer or winter schools every other year
duration: 1-2 weeks
subject: depending on the proposal received and selected
students accepted: 30 - 40
FENS-IBRO ACTION COORDINATED BY PENS
IBRO educational mandate: IBRO educational mandate IBRO supports high quality schools worldwide allowing several of them, but not all, to repeat themselves annually or every 2 years
to support new schools that change venue, organizers and the faculty in a way that suits the needs of the membership in the various countries and regions of the world.
to support the travel and lodging of the school students, mostly from the Central and Eastern Europe. FENS-IBRO ACTION COORDINATED BY PENS
OVERALL GOALS OF PENS: OVERALL GOALS OF PENS Increase the quality and visibility of neuroscience education in Europe
Decrease gaps between different European neuroscience curricula
Increase the mixing and collaboration of young European neuroscientists
Create a network of alumni and teachers capable of enhancing scientific collaboration and the establishment of international research projects within Europe (e.g. The Alumni Programme)
Alert young scientists to the research possibilities offered by laboratories in Europe and outside (eg: publicizing the Network of European Neuroscience Schools (NENS) and IBRO’s International Registry of Neuroscience Programme
Assist the development of Neuroscience outside of Europe by providing opportunities in Europe for the training of promising students who intend to return to their home countries (e.g. the present IBRO-FENS Fellowships programme, as well as the travel grants offered to students accepted to the European schools) FENS-IBRO ACTION COORDINATED BY PENS

PENS: PENS 2007 NENS GENERAL MEETING The PENS Committee is responsible for: selection funding ensuring a reasonable
geographic distribution of the activities running of the schools providing travel funds and lodging for students from the less privileged regions in Europe and from outside the continent FENS-IBRO ACTION COORDINATED BY PENS
TYPES OF ACTIVITY: TYPES OF ACTIVITY
stable location
experienced local organization
supported on a prolonged basis
faculty and the curriculum of these schools are selected on the basis of proposals
should aim to fulfil the requirements for the awarding of credits by the National European Neuroscience Graduate Programs 2007 NENS GENERAL MEETING Schools with stable location FENS-IBRO ACTION COORDINATED BY PENS
Slide16: 2007 NENS GENERAL MEETING TYPES OF ACTIVITY Temporary Schools with shifting locations FENS-IBRO ACTION COORDINATED BY PENS
FENS-IBRO ACTION COORDINATED BY PENS: retain the capacity to organize new single-event
allow students and faculties in different places to tailor their school to local needs and resources
these schools are essential to build science capacity through education
these temporary schools should allow FENS and IBRO to respond better to the needs of their member organizations 2007 NENS GENERAL MEETING Temporary Schools with shifting locations FENS-IBRO ACTION COORDINATED BY PENS FENS-IBRO ACTION COORDINATED BY PENS
TYPES OF ACTIVITY: 2007 NENS GENERAL MEETING
a mobile small Faculty capable of giving series of lectures or organizing
workshops
the goal is to enhance Neuroscience education by responding to local needs
the “core” schools might contribute members of their faculty and resources to
these travelling teams
these activities could be held in conjunctions with the IBRO Visiting Lecture
Programme (VLTP) TYPES OF ACTIVITY Travelling teaching programmes FENS-IBRO ACTION COORDINATED BY PENS FENS-IBRO ACTION COORDINATED BY PENS
